How Come 1.5tb Is Only 1.36tb?

Postby onyabike on Thu 11/Feb/10 5:20pm

Got a new WD harddrive - box says it's 1.5TB but when connect it up PC says it's only 1.36. that's a 140GB shortfall. quite a bit of vid and piccys that wont have a home.

The bigger your hard drive gets the less value is put on gigs so in comparison the short fall isnt much. My ipod was 3.6/4

because drive manufacturers have let their marketing departments define "terabyte "megabytes" etc as base 10 numbers I mean multiples of 10, eg they call one megabyte 1000k instead of 1024 or whatever it really is. extrapolate that up to terabyte and you have a whole heap of missing numbers.

wikipedia sez:
* In standard SI usage, 1 terabyte (TB) equals 1000000000000bytes = 10004 or 1012 bytes.
* Using the traditional binary interpretation, a terabyte would be 1099511627776bytes = 10244 = 240 bytes = 1 tebibyte (TiB).

your computer will be using the "traditional binary interpretation", . the packaging will be using SI

ie. they lie.

The 1.5TB is also a gross capacity, before deducting the overhead required for the file system formatting. The net capacity you're seeing is what would be expected after allowing for formatting and marketing lies.

Its all in binary so use data with more 1's rather than 0's - its common knowledge they take up less space. :o
