Depends on where you grew up. If you'd had pet lambs called "roast" and "lambchop", then I'd say yes.

horse is good lean meat, like kangaroo. no problem at all with eating it..

What were people expecting? They were buying plastic sacks full of meat for $3! And I'd imagine it was from dodgy South Auckland markets, not from supermarkets or reputable butchers.

Horse meat that was supposed to be pet food is probably the least-worst possible outcome for them.
