Home Ventilation Systems: Do They Work Or A Crock?

Postby Scotty on Mon 4/May/09 6:05pm

I'm wondering about home ventilation systems, like HRV, DVS and moisture master. Has anyone had any personal experience with these?

I'm interested in how much of an effect it has on condensation. :)

They do the job ! We installed one (with vents into the 2 main areas) in our 1950's weatherboard, barely insulated, single glazed mansion (Chch) about 2-3 years back and NO condensation has been seen since. Definately worth it if living in "older housing stock"

we have a heatpump. Heatpumps don't kill condensation.

Over the last 5 years I've had them put in almost every house ive build and some renovations ,All those people have said they would not go back to not having on .
Alot of them only run them in autumn and winter, I would however recommend NOT getting a HRV one as the seem to be the most expensive to run out of the lot , but still cheap when compared to other forms of heating

We used to have the good ole 'crying' windows, and often had to mop up the water off the sills. Every so often it would freeze on the inside of the windows.

Installed an HRV system 2 years ago, and have never had a problem since. We have no more problems with mold growing, and the house is much much drier than it was. This has made it a whole lot easier to heat too, which is good on the pocket, as we have a rather large house.

I don't think there is too much difference between the main systems on the market. We went with the HRV because they had more vents providing a lesser air-flow and because the sales guy did a much better job.

Clue to sales people.......if you want to sell me ANYTHING don't come into my house stinking of cigarette smoke with beer breath.....

got a fan in the bathroom, and a rangehood in the kitchen?

[edit]

oh, and well done on getting a warm place!

And, might want to check underneath for a vapour barrier, a la pissface's polythene sheet. I'd be aiming to cut down the moisture in the house, rather than stopping it settling on the glass (which is all the DVS at my place used to do...). Shame I can't easily uninstall mine. I'd happily give it to you...

We dry washing on a rack inside much of the time from now through to spring - and boiling jugs, showers / baths, breathing, etc, are all contributors to a normal level of moisture in a home surely ?? Our home ventilation system deals with it. Heat pump for warmth, DVS for dryness
