Yeah have been training, but the weather is not exactly the most suitable.
6 of my friends are biking up, the rest are being lazy and driving.
We are fundraising for world vision, that gives us abit more incentive.
And also because we are newbies, we've set aside 5 days just to be on the safe side :)

Any training routes you guys can tell me about??

Five days is good. Have you been using www.mapmyride.com ? It's brilliant.

Depends if you're carting stuff or not.
Its under 450km so Id say three days if someone is carrying your gear and four if you're carrying it all yourself.

Loader, i take it you got my PM ?
the maps on the blog link to the Mapmyride site as stated by Megan.

you can use mapmyride to plot your route to the Tron. then you will see from the elevation tool the hills you will be riding up and can plan accordingly.

having not ridden such a distance i can't advise you, but there was a group NZMATTO was following who rode cape reinga to bluff, and they plotted thier daily route which from memory was 100-120 / day at an average pace.

we are not roadriding this weekend so you can't tag along sorry, unless you have a mountainbike and like hills (mt climie).
see the - my first mtb - thread.

And Sean, we were planning on doing about 100km a day, but just need to find suitable places to stop each day.

Currently have a mountain bike, not exactly the newest model as I am poor and cant afford much, but its better than walking :p

I also gotta get a jacket or some wet weather gear so I can continue training, any idea where I can get some cheap, yet reliable stuff?

Righto mate.
if you have some knobblie tyres on that mountainbike, then come with us on Saturday.

meet ready to depart at 1pm, at the river road end of Pine Avenue, UH.

we are riding up to te marua via birchville, then up mt climie.
don't worry if you get tired and can't make it to the top, as its a there and back so as we descend you can turn round and enjoy the downhill.

probably about 5 of us going. won't be fast either.

you will need a windproof jacket. lots of fluids (you got a camelbak).

hope to see you there.

And I would love to come with you guys, but I have work on Saturday, don't have a windproof jacket (as of yet), or a camelbak...

Will definitely try and save for those though, as I reckon it would be a good experience to broaden my horizons, instead of sticking to blue mountains all the time :)

How often do you go along that route?

Riding on other roads is as easy as taking a different turn. Don't try to stick with just really quiet roads. You need to get out with the traffic....you'll have plenty of it on the road up north.

Yeah that is a good point. Will probably be planning a trip or more further north...the parents have a beach house in Foxton Beach that I could use for one night or so. Bike up there one day, and bike back the next.

if they own it you should be able to use it more than '1 night or so' - they should let you stay there all you want.

what way are you planning on riding - over the Aka's ? probably the best route.
have you thought about doing a loop and coming back via the wairarapa ?

when are you looking at getting a road bike. you will be able to ride faster/further with one.
i would not like to attempt to ride to the Tron on a mountainbike as you are planning.

shame you are not joining us tomorrow. will be a good ride.

if you are strapped for cash, you can buy cheap windproof jackets at warehouse. about $15.
and 2 drink bottles will be fine for you.

hope to see you another time.
