Help Me With Some Motorsport Rules

Postby Tama on Wed 15/Apr/09 1:53pm

Recently I've been observing a new type of motorsport and I was wondering if people could fill in the details.

The sport in question involves driving slowly towards some green traffic lights (say 35kph in a 50kph zone) with a queue of traffic behind you and then running the orange light so you're the only car that gets through. It seems particular popular in "green wave" situations where the lights are timed at (say) 45kph.

So, as I'm interested in this I have a few questions:
1.) What's it called?
2.) Does it have a national organisation?
3.) How does the point scoring work, do you get more points for the type of cars you hold up, for the number of cars - or both?
4.) Is there an age limit for participating?
5.) Do you need a special type of car?
6.) Is there a ranking system as you get better?
7.) Is there a secret signal to let other participants know what you're up to?

Any help/ answers would be appreciated :)

Rant over, I'm so glad I hardly drive in the city :p

Ah well, guess I should unpack the car now

Are you sure?

Down here it seems to be all about Peugeot 206s, Suzuki Swifts, grey hair and hats - so I assumed it must be affliated to the New Zealand Bingo Association.

Tyler's Dad - maybe they shift work between day and night?

Bah - Tama I object - you besmirch the word motorsport !! Something like "mediocre motoring moron's" would be more fitting for the green light cruisers.

I see a person with an "I don't really take notice of what is going on around me, I'll just cruise about in lah lah land" state of mind, and who has no idea of the utility of rearview mirrors, or the fact that lights are phased for our common convenience .... takes all kinds to make a world worth ranting about .....

Stopped at some lights the other week, and the front car (I was second) was stopped so far from the limit line, that the loops in the road were never going to sense the car and change the lights. I got out and told the woman to drive forward 3m. I think she'd probably been there 5 minutes already!
