Parents would need to pay. Saving from the time a kid was born. Just like they do in the states.

But given that NZ's primary export earner is educated people (the country makes fuck all foreign income out of anything else) that would be epically retarded.

I'm gonna stick to buying online from Canterbury companies.

The likes of Mainzeal/Fletcher/Fulton Hogan will be getting the Yacht cataloges out as which ever way you cut it they are guaranteed an income out of this.

But I am thinking that there could be a similar rot that places like Dubai have had when they have had this huge construction boom but no one living there.

Surely he has been taking crazy pills. The less I pay off the greater the debt i owe which is carried on the Crown's books. I am making the Crown richer by not paying my loan off.

And during the early years of the scheme the interest rate was a steady 7 percent compounding - well over the cost of govt borrowing. The Crown has made a good profit out of my loan.

In short - go fuck yourselves.

How does the country make money by exporting the graduate? The interest gained from the loan repayment?

I read somewhere recently that graduates don't actually cost that much to the country if they leave as they obviously don't use any services.

Yeah maing, they have to pay the interest on the loan coz they borrowed it off someone else to pay for your fees upfront.

By not paying a loan off, you're fucking yourself over as more of your tax when you get a job goes to pay for more interest.

Ah, the whimsical naivety of yoof.

I just paid AUD $28K after completing a 2-year Masters programme in Aussie. That scheme provides a loan until you finish the study (there are rules to prevent self-perpetuating student syndrome), then you pay your schekels - Seems fair, and worked well for me and the Gub'ment wallah.
Someone, somewhere, has to pay for those lofty arches - Fine by me (although I think my wife may have been less amored with the financial impact, particularly given my grotesque grumpiness whilst combining study with a more than full time job...).

When tertiary fees rose rapidly from 5% up to something like 10% of the true cost. Students had the same reaction as now, based on the same ignorance of what their education really cost and who was paying for it.

I had the misfortune to experience this reaction as an adult student at a time when many of the fashionable youth of the privileged classes thought it cool to deny their own identity and to some extent adopt what they imagined to be the clothes, accent and attitudes of the working classes.

They were pretty clear about what a good deal society would be getting if it gave them at least five years of totally free education.

This whole discussion is redundant. You borrow money, you pay it back, period. If you don't pay it back you are stealing it from another project. The rules are there, follow them or don't expect to come back and get services from the country when it suits you.

If you think the system is wrong vote for someone who agrees with you, in the meantime don't steal.
