Has Anyone Seen Starlight Express?

Postby Tama on Thu 28/May/09 2:32pm

As Rik and I were walking back from having burritos for lunch (mmmm... burritos) we spotted a big billboard for the "Starlight Express" - which led to a discussion covering the following important points:

1.) It's a roller skating musical about trains
2.) Which sounds like some sort of punishment in hell.
3.) An observation from Rik that "Cats" was dull, but at least some of the actresses were hot and wearing skimpy outfits.
4.) Musicals are about a hour and half long aren't they?
5.) Wouldn't it be hard to fill 90 minutes with rollerskating and singing about trains?
6.) The difficulty in singing about trains for 5 minutes while roller skating - let alone 90 minutes.
7.) An attempt by Tama to sing about trains - which lasted 15 seconds.
8.) Possible reasons to go and see a rollerskating musical about trains.

So, I decided to do a bit of "research" and dug up some Starlight Express videos on Youtube (mostly in German who seem to love it) - and yes, it's a rollerskating musical about trains - WTF :ib:

Has anyone ever seen it? Is it as it seems? Or is it to fruity and weird to be dull?

Most important fact you missed: it's by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and hence the worst kind of middlebrow shit imaginable.

It took Scotty until "intermission" to realise that there wasn't really a storyline - just a whole of songs about cats  Plus he thought that Victoria the white cat was pretty hot

I've got a soft spot for Jesus Christ : Superstar - but only the original studio recording (before he got the money to mount it as an actual musical), hell, it's got Ian Gillan out of Deep Purple in it (and of course it's lyrics were by Tim Rice - so not the awful pap Weber comes out with)

I am old :(

I think I would rather stay home and stick pins in my eyeballs.

I generally detest the concept of musicals, they seem to me to be a play with not enough storyline to fill a reasonable amount of time so they stick some songs in to pad it out a bit. So why would you take that concept and stick it on rollerskates

The fact they use roller skates increases the chances of carnage on stage. Personally, I will not be answering my phone for a month in fear that someone may ask me to go with them.

Nah it's worthwhile going. Just be sure to take a bag of ball bearings to chuck on stage :)
