Gravel On Switchback Track, This Sunday 24th June

Postby G on Thu 21/Jun/12 9:03pm

To everyone who uses the Switchback Track for mtbing, running or walking

Mountainbiking Otago are doing another gravel session on the Switchback Track at Nichols Creek this Sunday, 24th June. We’ll start at 10am and go till the 40ton pile is done. It’s much smaller gravel than previous so it’ll settle much quicker and all wheel-barrowing will be downhill. If you have a wheelbarrow/rake/shovel or grubber they’d all be handy.
The more people we get there the sooner we can go riding or whatever else you do on Sundays.
The gravel is at the first clearing (about 1.5km) up the trail
Cheers

Super stoked with progress on Sunday, we got 400m of the 700m of trail re-benched/fluffed and gravelled. A huge thank you to those that came out on Sunday for either a long or a short time, your efforts were awesome!

This Saturday 30th June will see us hitting The Big Easy (at Signal Hill). We’re putting in some pretty nuggety gravel to lift the trail surface up out of the mud. We’re about halfway up the creek with our efforts so far. If you know of anyone with a tracked dumper they can loan us, we would be very keen to talk with them.

The following Saturday 7th July, we’ll be back at Nichols to finish the remaining 300m of trail down from Sunday’s effort to the previously gravelled trail. We need as many wheelbarrows as possible to bring the gravel down the trail. If you can spare some time it would be most appreciated. There’s a wee bit of rework to do on the trail as we go but the guts of the work is hauling the gravel in the wheel barrows.

Kick-off at 10am both days, if you can only make one then the Nichols day would be the day we’d most need you.

BYO solid footwear/food and water/wheelbarrow/shovel/rake. We’re hoping to get a sponsor on board to provide some treats too.

Cheers

G and the whole MBO crew

You guys are obviously doing a lot of great work graveling those muddy Dunedin tracks. Our committee managed to find the funds for one of these: http://www.mucktruck.co.nz/ and it's been brilliant for transporting gravel. Much cheaper than the std tracked 'power barrow' - if you can find a friendly benefactor...

thanks for the kind words and for the tip kaiteri. MBO brought a wee 400kg tracked dumper a couple of years ago and has been worth it’s weight in gold…it would have moved 100’s of tons of gravel by now. Awesome cos it’s so narrow and it’ll climb like anything. Takes about 5 wheel barrow loads at a guess. Seems to go forever on a tank of gas too. Just need a couple of 1 ton versions to really smash The Big Easy gravel mission.

Next toy I’d buy if big Wednesday happened…ST240. http://www.singletracktools.com/

another awesome day done, thanks to those that turned up and busted out some good work. we got about 80m done, leaving about 100m remaining to get to the second creek crossing.
Next week...
Nichols Creek....we'll need big numbers there, and as many wheelbarrows as we can get.

Gravel On Switchback Track, This Saturday 7th July

Postby G on Tue 3/Jul/12 8:45am

Looks like Saturday is going to be a stunner, perfect for getting an army of wheelbarrows and rakes out to revive an amazing trail.
Kick off at 10am, head on up the Switchback track; at Nichols Creek till you find us…I’ll put short cut signs out too. We need as many wheelbarrows as we can get to get the job done…so spread the word. For those that don’t like wheelbarrows, there’ll be plenty of raking and trail reshaping to do too

Cheers

it's official, there's less than 100m to go to connect the old gravel with the new. thanks to everyone for their solid effort yesterday, stoked with progress. a big thanks to The Perc Cafe for the fantastic muffins they provided... they were devoured by the hard working boys and girl. amazing how much better you feel after a monster blueberry/choc muffin.
