yeah, i was having a quick look at the wgtn central candidates the other day cause i haven't a clue who any of them are. noticed stephen franks had a photo of himself doing karapoti 2008 in his blurb. looked him up in the results and think it was 3 hours 48 mins - not bad for 50+ age group! Trevor mallard did 4:32 so its the national party for the win by 44 minutes!

great that in the wellington region we have candidates from both major parties who are clearly seriously involved in mtb so you can genuinely trust that they will represent us well - talk is cheap, these guys both ride the trail.

Well, they probably do, but not in the sense that the likes of Vorbers are.

1 All CAN people are in central Govt
2 They do not represent us real cyclists
3 They are all linked to the Green party (Hence hidden agendas)
4 They are not a voice for cyclists
5 How many CAN people have you seen competing at at your local Club, do they talk with Clubs - No
6 All they are doing here is tring to create interest in the Green smoke dopping Pro destroy N.Z

While I'm not in the know enough to comment on the validity of the above, I think that CAN really should have stuck to their knitting editorialised the findings of their political research. let us make up our own minds please.

They've certainly 'threatened' any support they might get from me in the future.

yes, but its a sort of private forum with some weird entry restrictions - any random can't just jump in like vorb - its called "parliament". otherwise it seems much the same - often senseless arguments about irrelevant things producing no useful outcome, it just seems to be lacking the entertainment value.

You are right in that local councils play an important role in providing cycling infrastructure.

But the money to implement those is coming (on average - varies form council to council) 50 % from Central Government. The other 50 % is from local rate payers.

The 50 % contribution from local rate payers hardly get into cycling infrastructure - most councils are reluctant to invest more in cycling, either because they see cycling as a minority issue, or just because the typical council is often composed by councillors who are used car dealers, property developers, real state agents, suburbia residents, et cetera. These profiles probably represent fairly well the local communities, but the tradeoff is that you see more roads being built for more suburbian residents buying more used cars, commuting more to and from more greenfield developments, rather than serious provision for cycling.

One of the major shifts that is needed in Central Government policy is to pay for cycling projects with tax payers moneys. This is one of the good proposals that are advocated by the Greens, with its recently released Transport Policy, in which cycling, walking and public transport projects are funded 100 % by Central Government.
