I live healthy, don't drink, smoke, do drugs other than caffeine, so I figure that I could do without one?

I am a donor on the old drivers licence thing too.

In seriousness?

Yar. But this thread was more about donating in general. :)

I had a peek at the site. As well as having "donor" on one's license it is critical to ensure all next-of-kin are perfectly clear that you want to donate whatever good bits are left, and I guess to put that in your will.

If you turn up dead the hospital can't nick your organs until they have got consent from your next of kin - the driver licence thingy is just an indicator that you are a good bet, it is not consent.

I imagine this often results in good organs going to waste because rellies can't be located and get their shit together to deliver a definitive "yes" before the organs have expired.

Things go south fast once the blood supply is stopped. If an organ is needed at the other end of the country there is more delay, also the theatre & team have to be booked and the recipient has to be located.

Even then the derp family members can often say no/change their mind, so loads of organs go to waste.

My next of kin knows I want to be chopped into little pieces and given away. I'm hoping they can bury whats left in a big sized weetbix box.

There was a young surgeon named Gelf
who gave a girl's heart to an elf
the liver and spleen to a British marine
but the good stuff he kept for himself
