Ghost Bikes

http://www.ghostbikes.org wrote:Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street corner, and as quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel.

The first ghost bikes were created in St. Louis, Missouri in 2003, and they have since appeared in at least 48 cities throughout the world. For those who create and install the memorials, the death of a fellow bicyclist hits home. We all travel the same unsafe streets and face the same risks; it could just as easily be any one of us. Each time we say we hope to never have to do it again -- but we remain committed to making these memorials as long as they are needed.

Great idea,we are a unique community no matter what we ride and a ghost bike for rememberance is awesume,we have white crosses to remember peeps that have died in car crashes, even the drunk drivers, dickheads and hooners get a cross,so I all for it and for obvious reasons you wouldnt white wash a full carbon roadie or a mtb you would get a $10 bike from the auction as it is the symbolism of what it repasents not what it is or company its from,if anyone dies here in Whangarei I be the first to paint a bike for a fellow rider, but hope I never have to

What He said.
If I die on a bike (which I wouldn't wish upon anyone)
it would be a great memorial.

Is there any towns/cities that do mass rides each month where anyone can join the ride?.this would be a healthy exercise of positive force and awareness, its all about getting the message across to the drivers before a ghost goes up,these mass rides are popular in alot of countries and some places shut down some innercity streets just for the enjoyment of riders and walkers alike once a month for a day, remember if we can get a ticket for speeding being drunk or riding on the path then that must mean we have equal rights to be on the road,my apologies for going off the subject of ghost bikes, continue please.

We could mount it on one of the trees so that you see it when coming down towards the ford...
