Getting Around On Mt Vic

Postby Chris_L on Sat 6/Aug/05 10:07pm

Ok so i did 3 runs up mt vic today, mum was kind enuf to drop me of at the top.

BUT for some reason i keep ending up in the same place, which is the playground by the bus tunnel.
i take different routes, vere of the cliff and what ever, but keep ending up in the same damn place.

also, today, i was going to some where, and i found my way to a log jump (pretty much a drop) and it landed in some field, dont know how i got there....landed up in some street....

SO thing is, you guys have been going there more often then me, tell me which way is the longest, the best (no up hills, or not to much of it).
where do i start my journey, what should i look out for, for reference. and yea

im probably gonna go up there 2morrow.

thanks Ya'll

i use to go down mt vic all the time, but i havent been up in like 4 or 5 months and ive fogotten everything.

i remember going up on some walkway, had to go around alot of high hills, but i got (i think its on mt vic) round to like this steep as part (downhill),, really wide open space, but it has like 2 jumps, and at the top was this property could be a house (?), i WANT to go there again, but cant remember, ARGH

if the log drop is at the bottom of a short steep clay sort of bit, and at the top of a long lead-in that comes to a wide grassy area, immediately after the log drop angle left into the trees and pick up the trail.

there are no really long runs on mt vic.

It's really too hard to explain where trails are up there, there's so many of them.

Since I gots my Reign, I've been enjoying it particularly for the steepness - Just after the lower carpark (near the memorial park bench under the trees) the trail goes off down the hill in a really really sketch, muddy, rooty messy run that joins up (alarmingly) with the trails down to the bus tunnel playground - I like riding down that bit, even though it's short - because it makes me want to fill my pants just about every time

w3rd to the joyful primate.

The trails on Mt Vic are a vast complex maze with very little in the way of landmarks. To be honest the best way is to hook up with some locals, and see what they ride. There's almost always people up on Mt Vic who'll happily show you around - just keep a look out for a rider/bike that seems to suit the sort of riding you're into.

So I read your comments and figured im in a position to help you guys out since I know Mt Vic better than Anyone .

In my hungover state i put put this map together of all the tracks i could remember , most useable with a few that i doubt anyone knows about.
Its a few hours work putting this together but i didnt really feel like doing much else.

Hope this helps.

Nice work, Hipster!

Mike is the man who won the '97 Wellington MTB World Cup Mt Vic Citizens Race (on a Foes?), and spends half his life up there, so he knows his stuff

Albert Hill

Postby snaddo on Mon 8/Aug/05 10:25am

It's actually called Albert Hill on the the map that I saw (not to be confused with Mount Albert - hee hee, another double entendre).

I always assumed that Albert Hill was one of the original gentleman that always seem to be standing nonchalently on said 'knob'.

Gays knob is a better name though as anyone who rides there regularly will know where you mean.

There are heaps of tracks around Mt Vic and there doesn't seem to be any standardised names. I've got no idea whether the names that I have been told are in common usage or just spewed out of the disturbed minds of the guys I ride with. It helps to have names for shorthand though.

Anyone heard of - The big scary? Suicide? Park Bench? Butt Clench off the Park Bench?
