Gentlemen, Start Your Credit Cards

Online shoppers in NZ currently have to pay GST on any purchase worth more than $400. A Government move to cut this dramatically is expected soon.

I think I need to stock up on chains and tyres.

Even if you place the order now, if they do indeed change it "within days" you'll still get hit by the time it arrives.

but yes - :( I was waiting til the CC rolled over before my next purchase, now maybe re-rationalised.

Australia has a lot of potential revenue to gain that will fund a system to enable this. Nz business case will suffer from diminishing returns it will be harder to justify.

Also Australia is all about protectionism. JKs global, if it doesn't make money he won't impact that.

I can't see how they can justify the cost of recovery - Even now they're not catching everything...

I'd like to see GST reduced overall rather than added to more things. I don't think a consumptive tax is particularly fair.

Not being changed within days

Revenue Minister Todd McClay's office said he could not comment on specifics, but there was a paper on the issue that was expected to be presented to Cabinet in August.

There would be a consultation period afterwards before any changes were made.

The idea of the offshore retailer paying it directly is a good one.

yeah then we get a bunch of place not selling to here anymore

I would rather pay gst on everything than that.

gst does not make up a massive part of the savings on all the bizzo I buy from overseas, if all these retailers think this is magically going to make everyone shop in nz then they are retarded

The Australian limit is $1k. So you can see why they want to reduce it.

The NZ limit was set around the amount that was viable to collect. Reducing the limit means customs lose money processing low value transactions.

Yup. I don't bother ordering from overseas until I'm saving over 40%. It's sad when most of the time, overseas stuff still wins
