Gammy Leg = No Fun For Me

Postby Tama on Wed 29/Jul/09 8:09am

My plans for taking a break from computers in Nelson and riding bikes, paddling kayaks and climbing mountains have been well and truly sunk.

Last week I got a weird and uncomfortable swelling in my right leg (nowhere near my naughties you pervy sickos) which made it difficult to ride, so I checked in with my G.P. on Thursday who thought it might be a blood clot and asked if I'd managed to wrap myself around my bike or a tree. I hadn't, or at least not dramatically enough for it to really stick in my mind so he prescribed blood thinners and let me go.

Part of my cunning plan for the sifty paddle on Saturday was to avoid using my legs. However by Sunday I was well and truly in pain with quite a bit of surface bleeding.

Back to the G.P. on Monday, who looked at me and promptly booked me into the hospital on Tuesday with the warning they might want to operate then and there :ib:

The specialist/ surgeon had a look yesterday and announced he'd have to operate on me under a general anaesthetic ( ) - which would have to be booked in later. All this time I'm limping around bleeding everywhere and generally having a rotten time.

So... I'm back to the hospital on Friday for a pre-op check and going under the knife on Monday. Hooray!

I really haven't got much details (hopefully Friday will educate me a bit more) but I'm guessing that I won't be riding/ paddling/ tramping for quite a few weeks after the surgery and then I'll have to regain my lost fitness...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!

Ah well, all I can really do in this sort of situation is grin and bear it. But don't be surprised if I disappear off the radar for a while, and then (let's be realistic) appear again and post a lot of crap as I go progressively stir crazy.

What a steaming pile of bumcakes :(

That's not such a bad idea - can you still get that robot Lego you can write little programmes for?

I guess it comes down to how deep they cut ( ) - and I get the feeling they won't know until they get in there. I'll know by this time next week!

On previous missions, we had sat at our computers and seen pix of bikes, tracks, scenery, people and more as you take us through the rabbit hole that is your day.

How about a cam set up in the theatre? A regular, 5min shot of the op, to keep us all entertained? I'm sure the docs wouldn't mind...

In all seriousness, I hope it's good news (prevention!) and we wish you well. Remember to use a vivid marker and write "do not cut off this leg" on any leg you wish to retain.

All the very best Tama for the operation. & I have lots of Lego - mindstorms even with a wee camera so you will be able to build little robots, send them on a mission & be able to see what they are seeing! Cheers

That's bad news to hear, but lucky that it can be dealt with so quickly. Good luck for your surgery Tama, and for a speedy recovery. Take care of yourself. :)
