Your thoughts callers?

I have so much parc in our garage - some of it is just old parc like books and stuff that could be thrown out, then there are skis and old sports gear type stuff that could fetch a bit of money.

Is it worth the effort of a garage sale? Or has the internet/trademe/etc killed them? I have no idea so just wanting to know if I should go to the effort.

Dad used to go around to garage sales all the time in Upper Hutt Love

Check out the Leader and see if there are still quite a few garage sales listed in there! Big Grin

For the sporting equipment though, you'd probably be better off selling on Trade Me as you'll get more $$ for it.

Yeah there are always garage sales out in Bogan Central (Upper Hutt), no-one I know still goes to them but its worth a shot!
Its not too hard to set up just find a couple tables, some cloths or tarps and lay everything out.

All the people that sell on trade me get most of there stuff from garage sales. You get bottom dollar that way. TM will give you a better outcome but will take more time.

Gf's parents made about $300 when they did it, they had a lot of stuff though. In the ad you can say what street you're on but not the number, people won't come and bug you at 6am, you can put a sign out when you're good to go.

I'll go to garage sales if I see them and I'm not in a hurry, but wouldn't go out of my way for one.

If its just stuff you want to get rid of, and you dont want the hassle of garage sales then the $1 reserve, start equals reserve dratme auction is yo' frien'. Having said taht dratme fees are very expensive (like a book I sold for $1 which cost .50c in "success" fees.).

tihs you think will be worth nothing will surprise you, but stuff you think has some value is hard to sell.

I only use dratme becuase you dont have too many mongs ringing you, and you can list and sell tihs on your time schedule. If you have a garage sale you WILL be woken up at 6am by draters whose business it is. Also they will buy your tihs then sell it on dratme.... cut out the middle man.

Yep. We just got rid of a bunch of stuff that was taking up too much space in the shed. $1 reserve on dratme for most of it. Decent reserve on other stuff. Made about $600 out of it!

There are 2 options,

Odd people coming to your house for a garage sale at an obscenely early hour offering you 50c for everything the pick up, or beating the price down so they can sell them on trademe for $2.50 more than they paid you or,

Odd people on trademe asking you stupid questions or wanting buy now prices on $1 reserve items, or expecting you to spend your time finding out how much it costs to ship something worth $2 to the middle of nowhere at the other end of the country.

Pretty much the same either way, really Wink

odd people on dratme wins for me every time. I find it less intrusive than interacting with them in person.

2 very good points. It depends whether you like to waste your time all at once or a little bit at a time, and at least on dratme the odd people can't bother you at home unless you choose to read their emails.
