I noticed my helmet was particularly minging this morning when fresh sweat started activating the salt encrusted layers of old stale sweat.
I blame it on the government! I used to wash it When the clocks changed but now they've messed about with the timing...

So, begs the question...

Yeah, I meant the lining/padding/straps - anything that soaks up the sweat really

I'm assuming we are talking about the pads not the shell. If the pads have a pulse and/or lead semi independent lives of thier own its usually time to chuck them in the washing machine.

Not enough opitons in your poll. I wouldn't be able to put my road helmet on my head if I waited a month between washes.

Pretty much every morning when I get to work I'll hold it under the shower and rinse the pads and straps otherwise it gets stinky really fast.

If i don't wash my helmet I don't get any action.

I just give it a quick spring clean before date night.

Its not just the pads. I have to clean the straps as well ... as those quite quickly pick up sweat and then start to get that smooth "cake" on them.

I also make sure I leave it to "air" as chucking it on the shelf after a ride full of sweat doesnt help matters.

PS. Just rushed out to give it a wash before lunchtime ride.

Yeah. What vert said. Only with "their" rather than "there" because I'm a pedant.

Come to think of it, my helmet gets washed every time I ride when it's raining. Apart from that, I've changed the pads on my E2 a couple of times (they tend to fall to pieces ever 9 months or so)

My xc helmet gets washed when its raining and I'm riding. The fullface pads get washed when I notice the stench.
