Ti or carbon will be your top shelf stuff. While a good steel one could do the trick too. Personally avoid aluminum as it is harsh- but again its cheap and can be light. *shrugs*
I suppose it depends on what you are going to use the bike for..... and where you wish to ride it.....and if you want lightness over anything else.

good steel isnt too heavy - check out Cotic, On-One, Surly for starters. Will out last Alooooooominum, and just feels nicer to ride.
Or go carbon :-)
Trail riding, my pick would be the Cotic Soul. though Jamis do a nice XC in Reynolds 853 these days as well

it seems everyone's saying steel is the way to go - how much better is it than alloy - it seems to be quite a bit more $$...

personally i prefer the look and ride of steel hardtails, and i loved my Jamis Dragon HT. Like all things, just a matter of preference.
You can get nice Alloy frames as well, i would say there would be not much difference in $$ for a nice Alloy versus a nice Steel, it's just that there are more low end Alloy frames available.

How about a bit more info.
Are you intending to use this bike for XC racing, or just for XC riding?
What sort of budget?
Are you looking at new or second hand?
Personally I would say go for carbon for lightweight and responsive with good ride characteristics, but steel is a nice choice too. Alloy frames are going to be the cheapest way to get a reasonably light bike, and they are very stiff (i.e. good power transfer) but this translates into a very harsh ride.

Or you can go the whole hog and get one built up from scratch, although it would be a bit pricy (I think jeff at kiwi bikes builds them for about $1000).

main use would be for XC riding - would do an occasional race for fun rather than to win.
would like new, or used in very good condition.
Have got:
Fox F100 RLC forks
Thomson post and stem
Ritchey WCS HBars
XT Crackset
XTR mechs/shifters
Formula Ora K24 brakes

For that sort of use if it was me I would buy a nice steel xc frame... They have a nicer ride quality and feel.

another steel ht option is the Soma Groove.
if you interested in seeing how much to get in NZ, have a chat with Tristan @ Wheelworks.. he can get Surly and Soma frames on request at quite reasonable prices.
