ANNOUCEMENT RE 2009 GROUNDEFFECT CRATER RIM 50KM MTB RACE

After discussions with the CCC Port Hills Ranger and the Volunteer Track Builders, we've come to a joint decision that the Crater Rim race will not run in February 2009

As you well know, we've had an exceptionally wet winter, and the tracks have suffered. They need time to dry out and for maintenance work to be done and it is not realistic or appropriate to expect the tracks to be race ready by early February. Our postive reputations as mountain bikers depend on us being responsible stewards of the tracks, so all parties agreed it wasn't in the best interests of the Crater Rim race, the tracks or mountain bikers in general for the race to run next year.

The GroundEffect Crater Rim Race will definitely be back and I'll keep you posted on the new date.

i find this quite strange, i mean, yeah, we've had a wet winter and all that, but by February, i cant imagine the tracks are STILL gonna be wet, or still messed up by this foul winter... anyone?

surely they'll have dried out by february??
ha, we'll probably get golden weather from now til Feb and the place'll be a dust bowl by then.

Being still wet in February is not the issue here - it's the fact that the entire Crater Rim system has been hammered this winter and will require a massive amount of clean up maintenance work which can not start till the wet weather is over with. From previous experience there is no point starting this sort of work till at least late October as further spring storms will just undo any work done now.

plus of course the new race over at Living Springs (to go along with the Hammerhead and Vulcaniser)

I'll bet rod was REALLY pleased he didn't try to run the winter series this year! Oooooooh

Wrong im afraid. It has been disussed with the rangers and the volunteers who maintain the tracks and it was decided that there is a huge amount of maintanence to be done to get the tracks into a raceable condition. I say good on Rod. Hes got some sense about him.
The per rider user fee is going to be under council review (not just for the crater rim but all events) but thats not due out for some time and had nothing to do with this decision.

Sounds like the council are looking at revising the per rider use fee, but knowing how fast things work at the council even if they do decide to increase it from the current $2 per rider it wont be put in place for a year or two or three...

have the tracks been hammered mostly by the weather - or by riders too..?

Maybe we need a concrete all weather track installed along side the bridle path..?

both really. Its been incredibly wet and has just been chewed/washed away quite a bit, especially round castle rock.
