Yesterday, I went for a walk around the Maidstone Downhill track to see what damage had been caused by the recent logging activities which have been carried out by the council. The damage is rather significant, with alot of rebuilding required.

The first few corners of the track are as they were before the logging began, all but a bit overgrown. Once you get through these corners to the first small gap, the track stops. From here on out until the ladder drop, the track is non-existant. Basically, the logging contractors have buldozed an access road down to below the ladder drop. This has been the main drag area for pulling the logs out.

The only piece of track which still remains in this area is the easy line around the ladder drop and some of the run in to the drop itself.

The ladder drop has been destroyed, as well as the landing for it. The old easy line below the ladder and to the right is where the buldozed road runs down. After the run out for the ladder drop, the corner below into the drop still remains. This area is basically where the track starts again. Most of what lies on the track from here will easily be removed by hand, maybe with some of the larger stuff being cut down a little.

My intention is to use whatever track we can, but where we cant, build new lines. This is going to take some time and effort to get through all the cleanup.

Some time in the next couple of weeks, I will get up there and mark out a possible new track. We will be utilizing a little more of the land to try and lengthen the track a bit, yet still maintain plenty of speed for jumps etc.

Initially, the help required will be people who have access to chainsaws, and who know how to use them safely. We are allowed to remove logs that we cut for firewood as an added bonus. If this sounds like you, please get in contact with myself, either PM me, or email the Wellington MTB Club - attention Jordan.

wgtn[at]mtbclub.org.nz

If anyone is interested in helping to mark out a new track, send me a PM and I will try to organise a time to head up there.

Look forward to getting up there and getting the track ridable again.

Ive charged up the night lights , if you want to do some marking afterwork one night.

If you were asking about spare lights, I'm going to be away this week (I think), in which case you can borrow mine. The batteries will last for about 4 hours of mike-blinding goodness...

I'm in town until tuesday evening, so you can either swing by tonight or tomorrow and collect the light, or we can try and sort something out for tomorrow during the day.

I can approve that spending of club funds. best thing to do is keep the recipts and hand them over to Jordan for reinburment. Im sure he will be fine with that Tongue it

Jordan and I spent some time wondering around the maidstone hillside last night sussing out where the best options are to reconstruct the track where needed.

There is still a lot of parc mixed with soil and logs lying around that we have had to work around and work with but were pretty happy with what we came up with as a starting point for this Saturdays dig.

Managed to find a few spots for new jumps and use some of the existing track too, which should mean it might be ridable in a couple of dig days if we get the numbers.Double Thumbs Up

Just a reminder:

Maidstone Digging this Saturday 5th July
A group of people will be helping Jordan clear off some dead fall over the track and start evaluating where to start developing new track in the future. If anyone has access to a chainsaw, and knows how to use it safely, bring it along.

Everyone will be meeting at the bottom of the course at 9:45am and walk up from there at 10:00am.
