Posted: Mon 9th Jun 11:30am Post subject: Building A Map Of Magpie Attacks
A journalist, Lucy is looking at writing an article on magpie attacks on cyclists and needs our help to build up a "map" of where the majority of magpie attacks happen in New Zealand.
Most of you will be aware of this video from the Summit Road in Christchurch but we're looking at building up a more comprehensive nation-wide "map" for the magpie hotspots.
What you can do
If you have encountered difficulties with magpies while riding your bike post a reply listing the location of the attack and then the story of the attack (the story is optional, the location is the most important bit of info). If you can link to http://www.smaps.co.nz or similar that'd be great.
The Lauder end of the Otago Central Rail Trail. They just sit in the trees waiting for cycliest to come along and then BANG! they hit you on the back of the helmet Basdrats.

Yep, they are super vicious round there, and not just on the rail trail, also on the road. I got hit too many times to count one ride. Probably for a stretch of about 5kms, constant dive bombing from the front and the rear (hur hur). Nice big holes in the back of my helmet where it was hitting. Not a fun time.
