I always go 1B at Taupiri through Cambridge but my mate reckons Matamata is way faster. Opinions or other routes ?

I dont really like 1B - too many corners, prefer matamata, but going via tahuna.

Matamata is faster but very boring, I used to do that trip each weekend. But with some of the new diversions on 27 it will get quicke and safer.

dunno see we had a "race" back this weekend and i beat him to the bombays by about 15 mins. I know it is quite dependent on traffic and all that but still....
i used to find heaps of cops on the matamata road too - not that this is a problem if you dont speed of course

If traffic's heavy (e.g. long weekend) then Matamata via Tahuna, otherwise Matamata straight down the very boring 27.
Via Tahuna is about 4km longer but the offset is the time saved in heavy traffic.

I used to be towing so max speed was not the issue. I prefered roads that I could hold speed on. Ask some truck drivers, they will know.

I've got a manual and the 1b is pretty tedious, matamata is my prefered option, 245km from the shore and under 3hrs with a stop at the workmans in hobbiton for brekkie. Good for passing aswell

My stupid Navman said to go to Taupiri / Cambridge, what a bloody mission... it might be shorter in distance, but so much stop starting, lots of intersections... my prefered route is SH 27 Matamata then to Te Poi, onto SH5. I am sure this is 15mins quicker and I live north of Auckland. Passing is easy... long weekends with mega heavy traffic might be different.

1b is faster if you are doing it on a weekday, simply becasue there are more trucks on 27 during normal business hours and if you get stuck behind someone unwilling to pass it will hold you up.
1b is parc on weekends, holidays etc cause it takes forever to get back out at taupiri accross SH1.
theres f**k all difference either way may 10-15 mins max, but I personally find 27 boring and sleep inducing after a long ride/fair few hours in the car.

Went I went down for the SS nationals I measured the distances from Bombay turn off to where SH27 meets SH5.
Went down via 1B and back via SH27. There was only 500m difference with SH27 being shorter. The difference will be more too when the new section that cuts out the 'Castle' has been finished.
I suspect 1B to use more fuel too due to the stop/start nature.
Lincoln Rd Nor-Western motorway on ramp to roundabout at Rotorua: 2 hours exactly going SH27, left at Matamata and using the old short cut that by-passes the glade.
