Eh?

i did the night race again last night .

no problems there but .... on the nice tight twisty single track i have no problem keeping up in fact i think i'm faster than alot of others on the single track as i seem to catch up pretty quickly to the others on the single.

but as soon as we get onto the nice Wide Open 4wd track they pull away from me.

so i'm slower on the Wide Open 4wd track than i am on the single. how do i fix that ???

Go ride your bike instead of posting on the internet??

Honestly, do some speed work on the flats. The singletrack you can catch up using skills, the roads it is straight out power.

Also if you have been going faster in the singletrack the slower singletrackers may be more rested and so have more in the tank on the road??

If your in Welly your are in luck, the best way is do as much serious uphill road stuff on you MTB and keep pushing yourself e.g. if you went uphill from point A to point B in fifth gear and were flat out and pushed to the limit, next time try and do that in Sixth gear and so on - it can be a killer but you get results from it Smile

Same here. I think it's because I've got ssip weak legs.

Best fix being more time on the bike?

I think it's fair to say singletrack isn't usually as steep as 4wd. I find I'm good til a certain gradient, then I suffer like crazy. Unlike most girls, I came to racing with skills, not strength and endurance, and I'm part way through my 2nd year of addressing that. Many hours on the road. Last year I took 7 minutes off a hill TT from the previous year and 9 mins of my Karapoti time. Don't expect results overnight.

Practice, practice, practice.

In the last 18 months I've halved my time up the tip track - no special training methods or tools, just a fair bit of practice.

Consequently, I'm not as fast on singletrack as a heap of people I ride with. It would be nice to find a balance Blush

It's all pretty flat, just a few gentle up's and downs but nothing steep.

Some people have better leg strength and can pull a higher speed on straight, open track than others?

On singletrack there are more factors, like how fast you are game to take corners, and how well you know the track. I end up braking to avoid crashing into the back of people that slow down for corners that I'd try and take flat out.

Mind you my flat out is a lot slower than other peoples flat out too.

any riding will help, the more the better..to a point

I should really have added, I found as I got fitter this problem did get less(hasn't totally dissappeared) as now my fitness is no longer my sole limiter and I am racing against generally faster riders all round

I wouldn't 100% agree with that first statement cos even flattish 4wd tracks I still often find someone I have been following on single track still rides away from me......if it is at all descending its a different story and I often catch people on up hill single track ( in saying that frontal labottomy is about 1hr into the n-duros after at the top of a good esra road climb so endurance is starting to kick in)

but I do agree with the rest except the "girls" bit....as you(wgtngrl) have more skill than a lot guys out there Crazy

yep - standard 'tactics' for BL seems to be rest on the singletrack, sprint the 4wd bits. Makes sense tactically, overtaking is really hard (and potentially risky) on the singletrack, so everyone sits in and makes their move in the open.

basically, if you're getting dropped in the open bits you need to work on your sprinting - the pace on the 4wd bits are often 40km/h plus out there Cry
