 |
|
About 50 cyclists - including Australian racer Kate Nichols, who was injured in a 2005 German road racing crash in which a teammate was killed - have been involved in a hit-and-run crash in Mascot near Sydney Airport this morning.
Another well-known Australian cyclist, Ben Kersten, was also involved in the smash.
Witnesses to the crash have told Fairfax Digital's www.smh.com.au the group of about 50 professional cyclists were riding south on Southern Cross Drive, just south of Dacey Avenue, Mascot about 6.30am when a driver, agigtated with being held up, accelerated in front of the pack and then slammed on his brakes.
"The driver's come up close behind them and was worrying the rear of the pack and then [the driver has] gone past and got in front and slammed his brakes on," one of cyclist in the pack said.
"Everyone's slammed their brakes on and slammed into each other ... there were broken bikes - wheels busted and wheels snapped - and people lying on the road."
No-one was seriously injured in the crash, but most most cyclists suffered cuts, bruises and some sprains and possible fractures, he said.
Nichols was one of five national team members injured in a road crash in Germany in which team member Amy Gillett was killed.
Despite numerous national titles, world cup wins and a Commonwealth Games gold medal, Kersten has yet to ride at the Olympics.
Kersten was a member of the track cycling team at the Athens Games in 2004 included after Jobie Dajka was removed from the team by the Australian Olympic Committee. Kersten was subsequently ostracised by his teammates and did not race in Athens.
This was after he unsuccessfully appealled to be included in the team for the Sydney Olympics four years earlier.
At the Commonwealth Games he won gold in the 1km time trial and finished second in the keirin but was subsequently disqualified for dangerous riding after interefering with fellow Australians Shane Kelly. Teammate and Olympic gold medallist Ryan Bayley blasted Kersten in the media for "dirty riding".
"Unfortunately in the past, he [Kersten] has got away with a lot . . . " Bayley said. "It's probably about time he learns he can't do that; he has to ride in straighter lines."

I was wondering exactly that myself. Would prefer more details on the incident - did they catch the guy yet, etc. What a freaking nutter. Something like this should be held up as an example - probably to both riders and drivers to share with care.

Exactly the same thought - as far as news goes I don't want to hear about the riders past arguments with other riders - what about catching the driver ? Surely there is a reasonable degree of intention or at least recklessness to do something like this ?

Words evade me!! Why on earth do some people think they can just lash out at other people with no thought for the consequences?? Or do they just not think? So rapped up in their own world that they can't see past their own faces!! What are a few seconds or minutes out of the rest of your life - enjoy the music, the day, the company and just relax! Why the rush?? You'll get to where you're going eventually!! 100 years from now who's gonna give if you were 5 minutes late for work? But your great grandchild will if great grandaddy was a murderer, killed a bunch of cyclists cos he was too impatient to wait for a few bikes to go down the road!!!
Bet the driver is pooing his pants right now They're coming to get you hehehe
My thoughts are with the guys and gals who got knocked down - hope it doesn't put you off your game and that the injuries are only minor!!

They should put the driver up for 50 counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Unfortunately cars intentionally braking in front of cyclists is not an uncommon event. I've had it done to me both by myself and riding in groups 4 or 5 times in the last couple of years.
I hope they really throw the book at the guy. Reality suggests if he gets caught, he'll only get a wet bus ticket slap.

I completely agree, this "person" needs to be made an example of. And as for all the other cretins jeering at the injured cyclists as they went past, words fail me.

The comment about "the driver is known to police" makes it sound like it could be a scumbag who has done stupid stuff like this before... and is still driving.
If he has prior driving offences I hope they find someway to totally throw the book at him!!

I wouldnt be surprised if the car driver was just trying to scare them by slowing down in front of them but underestimated (as usual) how fast they were traveling. I hope the book gets thrown at him, not just a little book either, a big heavy hardback one.
