U-brakes?? V-brakes are better, try a different cable, i.e odyessey linear slik cable, and its also the levers and calipers, cant reccomend any calipers for U-brakes but you could use a shimano deore LX lever.

Well, for race bmx's anyway, the only use they get is for stopping at the end of the track, not during the riding, so why do they need to be good?

also because the wheels are smaller:
theyr moving faster around
so its harder to grab the rim
but if you get the right setup, (i.e no tektro) try oddysey or something, and they should work well enough
and dont run a gyro

They can't make the brakes too good on a kids bike, you'd have kids everywhere going over the bars

I watched the crash vid remix video on vorb last night, Alot of mountain bikers were doing this. Any bmx with a front brake is warranting it's rider getting a nose job from the pavement.

because you havnt got them set up right. With a decent cable and springs tensioned right they are like a perfectly bled disk brake, A solid ending and lockups with 1 finger.

Please, you're just a victim of marketing hype, tektro make most of the BMX brakes in the market, what you should say is that a brake with adustable spring tension is the go, yes a linear type cable will make for a firmer leaver, hell soft pads and a chrome rim help, BUT as dh_winner said, its all in the set up!
