Coming down off the top, you come to the Pylon (where fire road finishes)
Behind pylon some good folks had carved a trail down through the scrub ...across the Road to Port Underwood,( and this is where I bet Doc found the trail) Sad ...then further down into Monkey Bay.. Smile

The trail Blazers had put alot of work in...some big drops in it, berming added etc...all it really need was more riding to firm up the trail (and some rain)..

The Drops probably need a bit more work to make them safe, but apart from that it was all good.

I was at a BBQ the other night and i mentioned to some random guy that I like to ride my bike...well, blah blah blah...how this trail was damaging regenerating bush...I pointed out that Pinus Radiata was considered an exotic...turns out he's a DOC worker... Crazy

hey next time you up we could try and ride it!!! trails are primo at the mo, you could almost run slicks theyre that hard Big Grin

Rode it last nite...met some guys as we were going up at the end of the trail...the builders...

anyway all Doc has done is remove the larger built stuctures, and chucked some warning tape across the path, which was mysteriously hanging limp to a tree...i took this meant the trail was ok to ride....

anyway Simon crashed (as always) and tacoed his front wheel...see http://www.vorb.org.nz/ftopic-47353-3945.html

hey guys, probably best not to use peoples names Eh? ....where this is concerned...eh!!

but full agree with you, DoC should have better things to do.. Double Thumbs Up
Track Is MINT, so if you haven't ridden folks...get out there and do it, for for some govt lacky buggers it Angry !!!!

I notice Doc dont have a problem widening the entire Northern side of the Whites bay track ,up to the ridge,so a Quad bike can ride to the top of Mt Robertson...talk about double standards.....
And on the Southern side just up from the pylon, some Possum hunter has skinned and left loads of carasses just off the side of the trail...it stinks to high heaven Crazy and probably attracts wasps... Sad

Thats a real bummer : ( Blenheim is my home town and I have always thought it needed some more DH oriented trails. A lot of the time I don't even take my bike home anymore.

I guess the moral of the story (and we see it all the time on Vorb) is it's better to get permission.

Yep... get permission...

It is a hard battle to get permission from DOC, I know someone up near Craigieburn who has formed a club and has been trying to get permission for years...

Other option is to find some land that is not DOC, keep the land owner sweet and build away...

As for someone having put hours/weeks into a track, it is a bit silly to complain about it being taken out again if he built it illegally. If he has talents as a track builder all that has to be done is somewhere found that his work can be put in and appreciated!!

well I hate to say, but you need permission to build trails on land you don't own.

It's an easy lession no permission = torn down.

surprise surprise but talking about it on an open forum when members of a number of agencies can see may well precipitate the end of said illegal trails....

Hey, what more could you ask for... DOC are actually saying "come and talk to us, we may be able to figure out where to build a trail".

Before you talk to them, make sure you have a read of the IMBA trail building guide to learn why mtbike tracks are build how they are...

http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_building/trail_solutions.html

It is available here in NZ (Ground Effect have supplied many to trail building efforts) and may even be in your local library??

Oh, the other thing is for track building to happen you often need to be part of a club or something to make it official... and to get it to happen.

Last year tried to call Doc about putting in a trail, up off the Ono-Wakamarina trail, down a ridgeline, that appears to have good possibilties on a topo map..back down into the Onomalutu Valley...

got the phone hand-ball thing happening, then asked to send in a request(in writing)... still waiting to hear...that was May 07, but at least this guy is in the paper and he's saying hes in charge!!

exactly, ring him... talk to him. Explain that you have tried submitting and nothing happened and that you would like to know how to make it happen.

However, dont go in blind. Read the IMBA book, talk to others in the region (like the mtb club) who are keen to build, or are already building as well, get informed on other submissions for trails and then talk to him. Being knowledgeable and able to speak trail building and maintenance talk will help...

blah grade reversals, sustainable gradients for soil type, batter at 45 deg, radius of switchbacks, use of clinometer, OSH complient etc etc

yep gonna do all that...but in English Smile , have already contacted a few of the lads , suggesting we do this proper like, but thanks for the input...may PM you on some of the lingo. And will track down the book(seen it on the web)

the illegal trail that just got axe was pretty well built( some of the jumps and drops were a bit hairy), but hopefully if they don't charge the young fellas,we/they might be interested in getting something together....I have also just found out that my wife's cousin here is Forest Manager for the Marlborough District Council (11,000 hectares +of Council owned Pine), so i'm going to give him a call as well.

Smile will update later
