Hey James, if you've got a few hours free, head up Onamalutu and ride the first section of the Wakamarina track to Fosters clearing and back. Its about a 35-40 minute drive from Blenheim, and its a wicked ride.

Seconded. One of the longest fastest flowiest pedal-less beech forest singletracks ever!

Hmmmm. Well we made the mistake of riding from the very bottom, not realising that you can drive about half way up! To be honest I don't recall the ride time, I would have thought we climbed for more than an hour though. Worth every second though. Good description in the Kennett's book from memory.

You drive for about 10 mins past where all the signs are saying "END OF PUBLIC ROAD" etc. etc, until you get to a wee sign saying wakamarina carpark. From there its about an hour and a half at sifty pace up to fosters clearing. And about 10 mins back down .
If you're in an epic kind of mood, you can do the whole thing and end up at the pub in canvastown, on the other side of the Richmond ranges, but then you've gotta organise transport, and its a pretty big mission.
Incidentally, a pretty big mission which I'd be keen on a roadtrip from chch for in a few months..
