While it would be immensely fun (those switchbacks coming down to Iris Burn would rock!), it's in a National Park so riding it would kinda be a dumb idea eh?

It has been ridden - but beware if you are caught. Its bike confiscation territory! DOC have even been known to send helicopters up after reported riders! Personally not worth the risk, and lessens the chance of other rides in National Parks (eg: Heaphy) being opened up for riding.

We've just set up a "Fiordalnd Trails trust " with plans already for a bike/walking track between Te anau and Manapouri on the eastern side of the waiu river. Doc Are super keen.
One of the issues we'll have is where the proposed track is. A Small section at the manapouri end is in the national park.
So Now that the management plan has been altered to allow provisions for bikes in the national park, all going well we'll be able to ride in parts of the park.
And one thing I would like to see is to have a seasonl opening to parts of the kepler .

Just going through the setup and planning stage at the moment, But Doc have money set aside for the start of the project, What the Trust plans to do is find the bulk of the money to build the trail so it can get done sooner.
At present we've got a little single track park in Ivon Wilson park on the edge of town and also there are sections of the proposed track that can be ridden now, I'm clearing an over grown single track section near Queens reach at present.
From then we hope to get Bike specific trails built as well as duel use.

Thats good news. I've heard the kepler makes an excellent night ride. Though anyone who has participated in illegal behaviour like that is probably an unreliable source

If you really want to get some serious mtb riding done in the same area try a ride from West Arm of Manapouri to Borland Lodge, will take a whole day and there is a bit of carrying involved but there are some cracker downhill shingle/rock roads and a great part of NZ.
Need to get to West Arm via Real Journeys launch and either get a mate to meet you at Borland Lodge or pedal back to Manapouri the next day.

Yeh I walked that track earlier in the year, bush bashed from Borland hut up Mt. Titiroa and over to hope arm hut so missed a big section of the track but the bits I walked looked great for riding. Still a national park over there isn't it?

I rode around there a week or so ago, good to see you've made the most of the area available.I enjoyed the tech trail and had to have a few attempts at a couple of sections. Then it was back to play on the jumps in the trees across the road
