Folks,
Can anyone tell me how far Queen Charlotte Walkway (Ship Cove to Anakiwa) is (with confidence)?
I look on Vorb and it tells me 55Km from Ship Cove to Anakiwa. http://www.vorb.org.nz/article-63251.html
I look here and it tells me it is 71Km
http://www.qctrack.co.nz/track/
Can anyone give me a good answer on this? Alternatively, does anyone know the usual (i.e. roughly) total Vorb group riding time from Ship Cove to Anakiwa?

9 am watertaxi, about an hour to Ship's Cove.
Faffing and fotos. Hit the trail say 10:30 ish. Furneaux in time for lunch. Say 2 & half hours.
Punga is 11 k's further on. Just over an hour, unless you roll straight from lunch into pre dinner drinks.
Day two - I think the watertaxi is booked for 8am. So on the bikes before 9. Most everyone are off the track by 3:30. I think the last small group got in just after 4 last year, which is as late as I have seen aneone in the last 4 years.
So at a gentle 42 smiles per hour it works out to be about a day and half for your averagely fit punter.

Oh no... our plan of riding it one day is looking a little tougher now!

I know plenty of people who have done it in a day... but you do need to be fit and prepared to do so...

Nah, it is do-able in one day. That punter pace is about 9 hours. You would need to be in serious mode rather than sift, but it is achievable.
I know someone who one day wanted to catch the first fast ferry of the day out of Welli (back in the day) and be back in his own bed that night.

71 km sounds about right, I've done it over 2 days.
First day was Ship Cove to Portage, was about 40-45 km. At a fast pace with long breaks waiting for the slower guys in the group it took us from about 10am til 4:30pm
Second day from Portage to Anakiwa was a breeze at about 25-30 km, then rode back into Picton for a 2:30 (ish) ferry.
1 day would be do-able but it would be a long day.

We are planning on riding it and getting back on the ferry that night to come back to Welly. Going over the night before.

certainly doable for the fit, however I'd consider getting the ferry from anakiwa to picton as you'll be well done in trying to ride the tesraal back to picton

If you arent sure you could always do the road between Punga and Portage and not miss any of the 'good' bits.
Another option would be to get the last water taxi out and stay at Resolution bay with minimal overnight gear. Ride the track with an early start next day.
