Posted: Wed 12/Apr/06 8:48am Post subject: Which Is More Deadly, Sugar Or Marijuana?
Had this conversation with a hitchhiker the other day - we both reckoned that sugar kills waaaaaay more people each year than pot does - even if you compare per capita of users.
At a push you could link marijuana to a handful of deaths each year in New Zealand if any, while sugar-related illnesses like diabetes (not to mention obesity related deaths/ health problems) are running rampant and taking out hundreds, if not thousands of people a year.
As (refined) sugar is not actually neccessary for our nutritional needs, and it's bloody addictive (try not having sugar - it hurts bad) does that make sugar an addictive drug/ substance? In which case does that make sugar our third most deadly drug (behind tobacco and alcohol)?

I bet you won't find a hard drug user who hasn't started on marijuana
I bet you won't find a hard drug user who hasn't started on alcohol.
Ummm... I hope the person who just voted "yes" for Marijuana realizes that it's there has been no recorded cases of people dying of marijuana overdose in the history of the world?

True!
Yes, marijuana users are more likely to die from lung cancer, drug related crimes, or the munchies than an actual overdose.

The scary thing about decrimizaling it in NZ would mean that you could be randomly tested for marijuana, they're already doing that and tests for P in certain states of Oz, without the decriminalization, people whinge on about drunk drivers but what about stoned drivers? they're just as dangerous.

So wouldnt that then be a benefit, if we could get the stoned drivers off the road?

Agreed they're dangerous - not so much as drunk drivers (according to tests.) Remember that fatigued drivers and angry/ impatient drivers are also damn dangerous - and I don't see us out-lawing being tired/ ssiped off (yet).
