So, as planned, I arrived on the 16th after the best part of 24 hours in the air, and losing the 15th of May somewhere along the way.

Got to the airport lounge where everyone's favourite Mongrel met me, and took me back to his spare room from where I'm now VORBing.

Already been to Whitford, Woodhill, Hanua Ranges, and a quick run to the (f)redwoods @ Rotarua.

I'm thinking of leaving Auckland within the next couple of weeks though, because despite how hospitable Mongrel (and soon-to-be-Mrs-Mongrel) have been, although though the riding is good, it's not very accessible, and coupled with that, Auckland's not really got that much going for it.

What I'm thinking about doing travel wise, is to get a 'Kiwi Experience' pass. I'm sure a lot of you must've seen these green buses crusing about the place dropping off and picking up us Poms and other assorted foreign-types Wink .

Which brings us (at last) to the point of this thread...
The pass I'll probably get is the 'Funky Chicken'. It's half the price of the full pass, but having looked through both the Kennett Bros' book, and the not-always-particularly-reliable-Rough Guide to NZ, it doesn't look like I'll miss too much, but is this the case?

Finally, I am quite happy about staying in hostels, but I'm not overly happy about the security of my bike whilst there, so who (if anyone) along the Funky Chicken route - Rotorua probably being my next stop - would have (temporary) room in their shed/garage for another bike that I could pick up in the mornings/drop off in the evenings?

Come on, don't be shy, Mongrel can't be the only Pom-friendly VORBer out there, surely? Smile

My suggestion would be - buy a tihs jap car for under a grand - or even under $500 - and road-trip it into the ground. Lots of the riding is in tricky to reach places. Toyotoa Corolla/ Corona, Mazda 323/ 626, Mitzi Mirage etc. etc. - thrash

You know you're most welcome in Welly - give us an idea of when you'll appear and we'll show you a good time - e-mail me Wink

If I could drive, that would be a winner. As it is, I'm beginning to see how limited I could be over here not being able to drive Sad . Oh well, I'm sure everything'll work out Smile . At least not being able to drive myself out into the boons means I can't/won't be tempted to do potentially fatal solo multi-dayers.

As for when I'll be in Welly; probably not for at least a month, but I'll let you know.

A word of caution, or is that bragging.... you can do a potentially fatal multi-dayer just by riding off from in the middle of town out towards the hills Tongue it ... in almost all NZ towns....

We like it here.

True - Wellington, Rotorua, Dunedin, Nelson and Christchurch all have large track networks within 5-30 minutes ride of town. Auckland however has a couple of pine forests, 1 hours drive away - as you've already discovered.
