I've broken both steel and alu frames. You can build strong bikes with either material. You can build light bikes with either material.

The mode of failure of both materials is where the critical difference is.

Alu develops fine/hard to see cracks, which then oxidise becoming harder to see, until one day "SNAP" and you are walking (if you are lucky) out of the forest with a bike in two halves.

Steel usualy deforms before it gives. When cracks develop they are more visible than alu. Both of these give you a better indicator of "time to replace before it goes SNAP", hence why I prefer steel.

That, and its much easier to find someone to fix up a steel frame than alu.

mines alloy but not all by choice, I have ordered a keewee stealth, so it will change soon. The main realong is strength and rewelding properties, and also price

If i had the money I'd by an Intense Tazer hardtail though, alloy monocoque, ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhh

well i voted for alu, even tho i dont have a hardtail at the mo, when i did, it was alu, but i have an alu road bike and an alu rigid.

reason for buying al, it was a free replacement upgrade for the hardtail, and both the roadbike and rigid cost me nothing.

thats only because of the simple designs that most steel bikes have.
The first time I saw a DMR i thought it was some (Crnkin) Kmart brand, and i thought it was ugly, now its just simple

Which works so why change it?

Mind you I swapped that frame for an Avid disc set,so it came in handy eventually!! Tongue it

Steel all the way Double Thumbs Up

Alloy frames give a harsher ride, steel feels a bit more supple, caress it gently and dip your fingers in oil and rub them across the Crazy
