I have the old Fletcher map with the well known established trails around the Waipa carpark.

I know there is a whole bunch more riding to be done as I have read about it here.

Has anyone got any nice clear directions, maps they could email, or URL's with direction for the newer stuff.

I am interested in trail riding/XC stuff...

I am planning on an SS ride on Anzac Sunday.

Check out the Rotorua Mountain Bike Club website for directions to the tracks "out the back". Otherwise, you'll need to hook up with a local Wink

How far away are the "out the back" trails from the mapped trails?

seem to vary in distance and climb from the 'old' tracks. Here is the URL that Scatter was refering to (I think)

http://www.bikehubrotorua.com/trailcrew.php

I have been comparing against the map, and there is a hell of a lot of riding in the there I have never done.

and here is a PDF that has a map - it is 1.6 mb and full of ad's for Rotorua but the last page is a ROAD map of the forest.

http://www.rotoruanz.com/rotoruanz/password/visitor_info/tourism_rotorua_marketing/pdf_downloads/pdf_downloads.htm

Weather forecast isnt great, but it usually rains when I go to Rotorua, and who cares it rides well in any condition.

Great loop "out the back"

Up Katore to a choice ofGunna Gotta, North Face, Corridor or Eastern Spice. Then down into Mr A's trail, followed by The Tickler, up the Wash to the intersection, climb Direct up to Hot Cross Buns, then back down Direct to the intersection and into Be Rude Not to.

Double Thumbs Up

We did this route on DH bikes a few weekends ago, lotsa pushing but lotsa fun

Back a decade ago when I was working for Forest Research, we pulled out the ORIGINAL paper road maps for the forest. Double Thumbs Up These were the maps they used to the original commercial pine planting. They are called paper roads as many of them only existed properly on the original paper planning maps. Eh?

We used a copy to do some epic loop rides out the back of the forest, but often you would be following a road that would petter out to nothing, or all of a sudden be a drop down a rock face. Satan

Me, get lost in Waipa pine forest, never, nope, not me. Paranoid

Haven't actually ridden Corridor or Eastern Spice (that one's super duper new), but I believe that they are clearly sign posted and around the entrance to Northface.

Ha. Sounds all too familar. Bush bashing, skirting around a swamp, dodging sewage sprinklers, JOY !!!

And I forgot to bring clean dry socks for the end of the ride Hmmmm

Corridor shares it's entrance* with North Face. Corridor is the easier track of the two so I am told.

Eastern spice is found on the eastern (duh) side of the hill that North Face etc start at. Probably somewhere on the other side of the clearing (that is east, right? Paranoid )

We took the long way up on Tokorangi Pa Road with the DH bikes. (It's not Katore Rd Scatter, that's the one that goes past Bauer and Funn to the ponds and the beginning of A-trail).

If pushing up to Corridor/North Face, Gunna Gotta, Eastern Spice, there is a shorter way than Tokorangi Pa, but I forget how to get there. Blush

Ya, and I thought that be up Katore Eh?

Hmmm, I go check out the website Smile

[edit]
From the Rotorua mtb club website

"If you ride past the entrance of the A Trail right to the top of Katore and veer left about 20 metres, you'll see the short sharp climb into Gunna Gotta - Top half of track is clean and tidy with great newer technical sections and the bottom half has had loads of work done.
This drops you back down to Katore Road to the old entrance of the A Trail.
At the exit of the A trail head right to the Spruce Road & The Wash intersection.
(You can also continue through the skid site at the top of Katore past Gunna Gotta on the left and you'll find the entrance to Northface on the right. Top section (friendly) of Northface has had an upgrade and is now easily ridable. Also the trail builders have installed a by-pass for the nasty section of the main descent, this is marked and named "The Corridor" and traverses gently down the western side of the ridge bringing you out back on northface above the steep incline where you have to push)."

Definately up Katore .... pushed and rode up it twice today....Hit Gunna gotta and Northface, next time it is Eastern Spice.

Gunna Gotta is awesome, Northface was tougher, especially the slow and hard option, when riding the SS XC bike with little braking....

Had an awesome ride "out bacK" of the best days riding ever, also did A trail, (wicked wicked wicked Rotorua single track), Tickler, up the hill to Hot X buns, (man it was so windy up there, but awesome views and a great trip back down) be Rude Not 2 (can't work out which is better this or A trail) and back through funn, Dback etc .

The single track was perfect for the SS, climbing up the road was just ugly....

Thanks for the recomendation Scatter.
