just when you think its safe to let go and start a-whooping and a-hollering on the down sides of some of those hills, keep an eye out for sudden droppy huge ruts!

extra water, extra food, extra clothing, cellphone (there is no coverage on the track generally but in an emergency), survival blanket, first aid kit, tools chain breaker tubes etc etc... be prepared to spend the nightout if something goes wrong.
do not go if it has been raining heavy or if the weather looks doubtful (the waione stream is very swift and fast flowing when low, in flood or when it is high vehicles get swept away)
tell someone when you are going and when you will be back.
have fun and take photos.

My advice is; don't leave your vehicle at the start, use one of the options for having it taken to the end - too much trouble with break ins.
Basically just have a good time, don't race it but actually enjoy it as a scenic trip.
Keep an eye/ear out for the motorbikes and 4wds which will be going both ways.
Take some warm gear as the weather can change pretty quickly, and if there are mechanical troubles there can be some standing around.
If people are running rim brakes make sure the pads are good, if it is wet the grit is very abrasive and you don't want to have pads worn to the metal.
It is a great ride, I have done it 5-6 times, and enjoyed it every time.

have you tried checking with that backpackers place howard's lodge? (who do dropoffs and pickups) but there's a bunch of outfits that do services re 42nd traverse.

I have done the trip twice, with groups of six and eight riders.
So travelling at the pace of the slowest rider and giving them a chance to rest...
... we took five and half hours with a group that included a relatively inexperienced rider and five hours the second time.
Weather was fine-ish and the track in good condition on both trips
Enjoy.

Also be prepared to do some muddy/wet creak/stream crossings. Its fairly trivial if you are used to back country riding, but if you aint used to it be ready to get wet feet and slippery footing.
Good ride, lots of cool views. And if you are up for it, there are some other good rides in the area as well (refer Kennets mtb guide book).

I've done it once,
was an awesome ride! we also did fishers track in the same weekend.
Howards lodge in national park do shuttle runs for the 42nd and fishers track which are cheap
take a box of muesli bars
take a couple of tubes
and watch for the second gnarly descent! (You'll know it when You see it, once you pass the lookout)
it's all clay base and an oil slick to ride!
and don't forget to take some cash for the Owhangao pub at the end of the ride!
