Right. Spending a week in Rotorua/Taupo in a couple of weeks, and facing major dilemma in which bike to take, as can only take one. Options are: 4" front sus specialized singlespeed hardtail (32:16 ratio), vs. 3" full sus giant NRS with 27 gears. Will be riding pretty much everything, including from town out to Whakarewa trails.
Please help me vorb.

When/if you get tired cruising will be much more pleasant on the NRS.

I would go the geared bike, esp with lookin to be away for a week, on the third and following days an SS can be hard work, also vegas is rolling were as Taupo is a little more undulating

I'd go the singlespeed, but it all depends on what style riding you like. If your more into purely the XC side of things, take the NRS, but there are plenty of drops and jumps round the redwoods that would be more suited to something a little sturdier. I would prefer to battle on the climbs, and have fun on the jumps etc. that stand by and think everything looks cool, but be too scared to ride it.

Despite the poll results the SS is ahead at the moment (but mostly also because I can't be esrad cleaning the giant after doing katapoti the other day. Might throw some clipless pedals on it htough...

An interesting thought, could you rip the gears off the NRS, and slap them on the speshy??
Depends on your set up and stuff though. and if you can be bothered

Was toying with cannibalising the giant - getting the USt wheelset off of it, and maybe the hydro brakes, but might just take it as is, and keep it simple.
The rides will be more quick loops than epics, as it's technically a honeymoon, and will be the wife's first major off road excursion, so thing the ss should be sweet

i would take the SS.
i could pedal my SS pretty much all the way to the top of the good tracks out the back end of Rotovegas last time i took it when i was a bit fitter. and coming down the is a blast on a hardtail Single speed.
but then if you are doing a few days of riding back to back then the single could be hard work and the hardtail could give your body a bit of a hard time. dont forget the night riding activites you will be indulging in you dont want to be to knackered from a day in the saddle.
