17 December 2004

Dear

ADDITIONAL RECREATION OPPORTUNITY- BOTTLE LAKE FOREST PARK

The purpose of this letter is to inform park user groups and local Resident Associations of an additional area of land that is currently being incorporated back into Bottle Lake Forest Park.

The area of land was previously part of the landfill site and is Stage 1 of the Burwood Landfill Handover. Ultimately all refuse operations will cease on the site and the landfill developed to provide additional recreational opportunities.

Walking tracks and mountain bike tracks will be developed linking this new area with other track networks over the next 2-3 years as the landfill area is gradually reintegrated back into the park. There is still some productive forestry adjacent to this area and access may be restricted from time to time due to safety obligations associated with harvest operations, similar to what occurs in other parts of the park.

I have enclosed a plan of the new area, showing the proposed track layout and other features such as picnic areas, observation points and planting areas etc. The reverse side of the plan has an aerial photo showing the actual location of this new area within Bottle Lake Forest Park.
Track layout should be taken as an indication, as the final location may vary slightly from what is shown on the plan. Tracks may be altered from time to time in response to user preferences and feedback, or because of forestry operations.

Public access to the site is still restricted at this stage until the perimeter fence is relocated to secure the landfill site. An indicative work programme for the new area is shown below.

January - February 2005 - Relocate perimeter fence around landfill
February - June 2005 - Install walking and mountain bike tracks
May - September 2005 - Tree removal and new planting
Summer 2006 - Expand site as additional landfill area becomes available

Copies of the plan will be displayed on an information panel adjacent to the new area and in the Bottle Lake Forest Park Information Centre.

We trust this new area will provide some diverse and additional recreation opportunities for local residents and other park users alike.

If you would like any further information or assistance in regard to this project please feel free to contact myself or the Park Ranger at Bottle Lake, Warren Hunt.
Warren’s contact numbers are: Office 941-7540 Mobile 027 475-9708

Yours faithfully

Kelly Hansen

Awesome, bottle lake is fantastic breeding ground for the next generation of mtb'ers, we're lucky to have something like this which newbies (and some of us oldies) can enjoy Smile

if you contact Kelly or Warren and give them your views you can ensure that mtb'ing remains a prominent force out there - there are a number of other types of fitness that are all wanting a network of tracks out there

:O

"Breeding ground" and "Bottle Lake" should not be used together in the same sentance!
There are some weirdo's who hang out there... and the Mafia only make up around 1/2 of them! Crazy
