I was thinking that vorb was getting too focused on bikes that need dead dinosaurs to get to the top of a hill, and that what everyone needed was a good dose of xc madness. So on wednesday night I went out to round six of the beastway (a 1 hour "race as many laps as you can" race on a cycle circuit out in london's east end).
I've done 3 rounds before, and after a good run at the red bull the previous weekend, I was hopeful of another good round.
Unfortunately, I was feeling parc. I've got this theory that it's to do with me drinking too much water in a short period of time - maybe I'll need to try this out in a couple of weeks.
Anyway, I managed to get 5 laps done (each around about 3 miles, I guess - it's hard to tell, as the course is changed each week. There was no places to rest - all the downhill sections were over in 15 seconds, and the flats and uphills were all middle/big chainring jobbies.
The nice bit about beastway is that they have lots of people out taking digital photos of you racing around. And then post them on bikemagic. So in the interests of making the screen less white, here's more of me...

Now remember Jono, smile for the camera, that's right smile ... good boy...
On a slightly trippy not I was wandering past the Krazy Lounge munching on a Falafel yesterday, and who did I see? Why it was Big Al, and Ang... they'd returned briefly and no one had told me - which means my spy network is breaking down... damnit...

Actually, I had completely forgotten they were going over - it's for al's brothers wedding...while I was racing last weekend, vic and craigy were undertaking a blind taste test at alis place of various wines and champagnes (and fakes). Obviously I was upset not to be there...

Well, I was going to poke out my tongue, but I kept on forgetting until I was past the camera. And the ones where I did remember, the photo was slightly blurred so it looked like I had a mutuant lip. I guess that's the risk you have to take when pursuing a career in MTB modelling...

Wow... summer... I miss summer so much
Riding around in the evenings... still warm... t-shirt and baggies... BBQs...
Torrential rain as I recall...
Drinking too much water too fast is a bad move... makes me feel awful too...
And who could forget Chris Harris chucking up fluids in the test match at the basin reserve (...right after he drank a whole lot)? He batted another six or seven overs till the end of the game too, and had to stop again to empty his guts some more... what a champion.

aaahhhhhhhh LYCRA
I'll wear my baggies while riding through town, but there's no way in hell I'm going to do it while xc racing (or, for that matter, when I'm doing a sunday ride). 45 miles (around 70km) in the saddle is a bit much in nasty esra-smacking shorts....

I have nema baggies... they rock... They have a comfortable form-fitting open weave lycra inner portion... and a baggie exterior. They are to bike shorts what Bat Man is to humans... They rock...

Hrm - you can still call me mr suspicious about epic rides and baggy shorts. Too much chafing. Besides, when the shorts look as stylie as mudzys creations, you can't help but be seen in public with them on

Yep. 100mm RLCs. And on a 6 year old frame (!). With 20mm of sag, they ride damned nice. And the lockout is good on the 16km ride to the race start....
