I think both parties are closer to the centre than their campaigns indicate. But each is leaning away from the centre in the hope of differentiating their campaigns and polarising the voting public.

National campaigned closer to centre last election and got nowhere. So they campaigned further right and it seems to be working.

The terms "left" and "right" are close to meaningless in our political climate.

The greens idea of transport is outlawing big trucks, reducing the distance trucks can travel and reintroducing train freight to regions that lend themselves very poorly to it.

But triple handling of freight does help the unions. Wink

Fonterra have just built their own rail terminal to handle all their Waikato production. I guess they were looking to give the transport union a helping hand.

Having your own terminal makes sense, but you need to be bloody big to make it work. Shifting stuff from truck to train to truck to destination doesn't make sense unless you're selling forklifts or running unions.
