I read Tama's great review of this ride awhile back. Being in the Wairarapa
over Christmas thought it would be a nice way to spend a morning. I'll
probably be riding alone so wondering;
Is the track easy to follow, i.e. is it will defined and/or marked?
Is this a popular track, i.e. would I expect others to use the track during
a weekend or over the holiday period?

Yep - easy to find - just start at the carpark/caming area, and head up the track (to the left of the stream). There is a (short but fun) loop over the stream to your right - the track heads up the hill to the top. You can also head around the road and do it as a loop rather than a "there and back" (I prefer this option, but can't remember the name of the road you'll need to use to come in from that side - I think it's mikimiki road.
In terms of people out there - I've never seen it with many. So long as you keep your speed under control and liberally apply cheery "hellos" you'll be fine...
...and the track rocks - I first rode it about 10 years ago (at night), and it's still one of the better singeltrack rides close to wellington...

2. It is impossible to get lost on the this track well defined all the way
3. It is easy to find the track - it links the head of two valleys - the track starts - ends at the end of hte respective road up each valley.
4. I think one of the roads is Mikimiki
5. I prefer doing the ride there and back because riding on gravel & sealed roads doesn't appeal when there is a single track that will take me all the way back to my car.
6. In the couple of hours we were on the track last summer, I think we saw a couple of groups of walkers. They were close to each end of the track

one other thing to think about - if you're thinking about doing it as a loop (out on the road to mikimiki and back over the saddle to kiriwhakapapa) - both roads are on your left when heading north on SH2 out of masterton (mikimiki will be first).
I actually prefer the mikimiki loop option, as the climb up mikimiki is nicer than the kiriwhakapapa side. But it does add about 15k of riding (all on the road or on gravel)...
