one thing i don't like is two different materials for one frame, carbon rear etc. see lots of join failures

Again, largely depends on the quality of the build. It's definitely something to beware of on lower end / poorly constructed frames. If done right, it can be a fine thing.

Really? Lots of forks around of carbon and aluminium glued together - like mine! - so I'd hope they've sorted out gluing one to another.

Why can't shop guys just be honest and say - some Carbon bikes are more comfortable and some aren't and aluminium might give a stiffer rear end etc?
Is that too complex for them or do they think we, the prospective buyers are stupid? Hmmmm

1) often shops employ sales people, not bike people to sell, so often the sales ptches come out

2) many people buying road bikes at the moment don't have a whole lot of knowledge about bikes, often its their first or second bike since their teens, so its easier to give tem generalisiations than bore them with "FACT"

And you can't tell them everything or they'll fall asleep! Big Grin

There are great, okay, mediocre and complete parc bikes in ALL materials - the sheer fact of lasting doesn't make a bicycle good, it's much much more than that.

Actually, I might expand on that. It IS universal. I don't think many people at all will buy a bike that's ugly; other people might think it's ugly, but that's just an opinion and we all have those.

If you like bikes (I'm guessing most Vorbers do?), then a huge part of the attraction to bikes is what it looks like - bugger all bicycle buyers could actually tell the subtle differences between equivalent bikes, so it usually comes down to what appeals to your eye. Whether that is the look of the frame construction, geometry, components or paintjob, if it don't look right you ain't gonna buy it...the aesthetic side of cycling can't be underestimated.

This excluded beater bikes which often deliberately look like freakshow exhibits. Wink
