huge effort from the big man, and thingone got a smoking quick 3.53, after having to chase back on the main bunch from dropping a chain.

Good stuff Sifter and awesome stuff Thingone!!
Thingone certainly looked the part on his bling Addict with your bling hoops when I saw him warming up this morning.
Me... I had a tihs day. Was feeling pretty ok for the first half on target to make my goal of 4.45. But at about 110km my legs just went "nup... screw this" and stopped working. So a complete grovel to the finish from there and almost an hour outside of my goal. I know exactly what went wrong:
1. I'm a fat basdrat and I should train more and drink less booze.
2. I didn't stick to my eating plan at all and it cost me. I had it all planned out in my head what I'd eat and when and then I didn't even eat half of what I took.
The heat didn't help either. I went through 6 bidons. Got readings off my Polar of 31 degrees in the sun on Kuratau Hill and then 32 degrees on Hatepe!!
To make matters worse the pizza shop I was looking forward to visiting don't look as though it's there anymore. I'm off on a hunt for pizza after I have a quick nap.

I've heard from both Gav and Connor (cpower - not conners).
Gav came 5th in the Huka (I shoulda put some money on that) and Connor 2nd by half a wheel in a sprint finish at the end (they broke from a group of 10 a few k's out). Unfortunately the lead truck did something and got in the way and he smashed his helmet when he went down, but said he thinks he's ok...
I made up for not being there with a few hours on the road and a quick outing on the dirt straight after. Feel better about it now

Started my lap a 11.45pm, finished at 7.05am with about 30 min of stops.
Those Maxi enduro riders are amazing, I struggled to ride 1 lap at an average of 23km/h when they do 3 laps at that speed or faster and then do a last lap with the main field pretty slowly as a warm down!
Im feeling really bad now, I hit the wall at turangi and went into "limp home mode" I was pleased to make it up all the hills without walking although I did stop and sit down and stare at the road for a while at the top of hatepe.
All in all I was happy doing a ride that was 50% longer than I have ever done before and in the middle of the night with no sleep as well!

Westley Gough over Gordy from the break. And I forgot who got 3rd (ryan someone?) but they were sporting an awesome mo and finished between the final break and the bunch

Did the driver pull the old "I'm over the finish line I think I'll just stop" trick forgetting there were sprinting cyclists behind him??

I must say it was very demoralising when I was on my last legs to be passed 3 times by Tim Gudsell! He looked like he was out on a training ride that involved pacing some friends doing the relay. At one time he came past on Hatepe Hill fresh as a daisy, stopped to talk to some mates halfway up and then took off again at about the pace I take off from a set of lights on the flat!

I believe the truck driver didn't realise his truck was bigger than the finishing arch and cut it and it collpased on the cyclists

answered my own question, your talking about solo. The race results reported in NZ herald.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10545blahblahblah
part of the report here;

He was half a wheel ahead of 2007 winner MacCauley with Yates third, retaining his lead in the national points series. |
thats a close finish!

Bad luck, Tuggie!
Fantastic time from Clive - holy jebus!
Sifter thinks he got 4.22...
And in further Roadworks news, Tim Wilding (Santa Cruz-Pearl Izumi-Roadworks-Maxxis) won the inaugural Huka XL MTB event run concurrently with the lap of the lake. Wicked results from my boyz.

What... by next year someone would have opened a gourmet pizza shop in Taupo just like the last one so I have something to look forward to at the end? I ended up having pizza hut which just capped off a tihs day by making it that little bit tihstier.
Funny thing happened at pizza hut while I was waiting though... An emo looking metal head and his girlfriend were trying to decide between a large (8 slices) and jumbo (12 slices) pizza. Her - "Jumbo is 12 slices. That's like 8 bits each." Him "Nah... it's 7 each. You can't count." I weep for the youth of this country. Actually that's not true I laughed and then tried to cover it up by feigning a cough, which unfortunately came out as a coughed "Mong!".
Kudos to the person who opened a Kaffee Eis in Taupo though. I love you.
