Heay - that you Toni??

Lol - maybe I dont but I think the REAL reasone may have something to do with I only finished a 18 hour shift at 1400hrs and went out for my ride then then - didin't get home till 2015 due to a few delays with the seatpost slippage issue mentioned in another thread.

If it is you Toni - you know me - stop taking the ssip Wink

Um....there is definitely something (many things) VERY +'ve about riding early.....loads of things actually - what time you out??

Was the Colnago a C40 w/ DA??

Just wondering if you look beyond your front wheel when you're riding? I rode from Onehunga up to the transmitter and back along Hillsborough Rd to Titirangi and there were loads of riders out...passed a few and got passed by several more (a veery nice Colnago blew by me on the climb up from green bay to Titters). There was a regular procession of bikes going the other way.

Nah, Lambretta's parentally assigned name is Stephen..

I got to the transmitter at about 8 am, afternoon riding is something that happens to other people that aren't fathers...

It might have been a C40 - but there are no big helpful numbers like Looks have so can't be certain, it was DA though because I was consoling myself with the fact that I'd done the right thing by putting Chorus on my lowly CLX Satan

I've ridden Indian-built Lambrettas that are indistiguishable from their Italian cousins...and I wouldn't put a jap motor in them either. Tongue it

I still dont think you can beat Albany Hill. Its been a few years since Ive ridden it, and a few more since I was competitive going up it, but Albany Hill finds you out. And turning around at the top on a Sunday morning - early - to do repeats gives you the best downhill tihs your pants thrill there is. If you don't hit 100 kmh by the time you hit the pub, you aren't trying.

Did my repeats one morning on my TT bike. Hitting 90 on the bars still sticks in my brain as one of the more scary moments in my life...

Albany hill isnt so bad, try going up east coast road towards silverdale. the hills arnt as long as albany, but they are steep. its always a good bet to come back via albany hil on the downhill though - makes a good 40km weekday ride.

I concur. East Coast Bays Road to Silverdale has been a staple feature in my long weekend rides....can be tough but soooo good for the heart/lungs/legs!

There is another hill out west auckland.....
Maybe not so fun as lone kauri rd (My favourite too)
It's called Te Aute Ridge rd and it's on the way to Bethells beach.
Bit of a dead end but it's impressive.
This is a loop rd but you want the first left on the way out. Go to the gravel and turn around.
I think it is about 2km long but is actually steeper than the steepest parts of Mountain rd!

Pack a 27t or do some zig zagging!

I concur. Te Aute Ridge Road is a good little addition if you're going through Scenic Drive.

Just looked at it on Google Maps terrain thing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like its pretty damn steep at either end for about 400 - 500m and then largely sits on the ridge and is undulating.

With only looking at it in that way and not in person, looks to me like the initial climb either end is pretty brutal, but it doesn't have the overall brutality that Mountain Rd does as Mountain Rd is nearly as steep for much longer.

However, I'm more than prepared to eat a large slice of humble pie on this one next time I'm out those ways if I'm wrong.

Ok - sore legs today..... from Karekare hill..... still definitely a steep one... 15mins up and 2 mins down.

What do others think.... my favorite is still Lone Kauri Road..... I do Karekare first, then Piha, then Lone Kauri - but can someone tell me where the LK is?

Dont quote me on this, but Im pretty sure the Lone Kauri WAS the one on Piha Rd around 20m west of the turnoff (towards Piha). All that is there now is a big stump beside the road. And of course the irony is the original Lone Kauri is no more, but there's squillions of Kauri everywhere else.

Damn it - I never go past Lone Kauri Road as I turn down it into Karekare then up Karekare Road over the top into Piha then back out of Piha and then the right turn DOWN Karekare Road before climbing back up Lone Kauri Road and turning RIGHT onto the Piha Road and heading back to Scenic Drive....

Mind you I am always looking for a huge tree - not a stump....will go take a look though - cheers!

Stuff it - just did first ride after Taupo - went round the Waitaks loop in best time so far (5:58) - didn't see another biker - forgot again to go down (was going to on the way up) and look for the 'LK' (Stump) - Will next week Wink
