Last year I led Mr Waghorn, Mr Farrar etc along Koru, SA, ML and then as I started up Aratihi I heard the sounds of silence. Yep, they had taken off on a better route. I knew I was stuffed. I felt the icy chill of failure at the start when Jonny reckoned the winner would go about an hour under what I thought was going to be a good time for me.

Wooden spoon for me. Dead last in the Open Crazy

Still, at least I was Open and not burgling.

I can't see this year being any better yet. My route looks a bit suspect.

{Posted via mobile.vorb.org.nz} Indeed - I think in the year that we won it it pretty much came down to being a very even pair. From memory we even left the Koru/Livewires loop for the first one home as it was too close to call who would be back first. Twisty tie on the bridge as an indicator as to who got there first and everything. What a bunch of seriouses... Laugh Out Loud

But I like the idea of total time as well, for the same aforementioned reasoning above. Of course in that case your steamer needs to have a certain amount of pace/fitness as to not drag the chain getting to the top of TF/Vertigo...

I'd say a clever vet like Matt farrar or Karl Ratahi.

Don't follow me. I'm bringing sandwiches and am mainly looking fwd to trying my new bike down Trickle and Vertigo. I might even put my saddle down for the first time in years to look like a real steamer.

Maybe I should get a Hite-rite. Anyone remember them? Poor man's Joplin.

Every year we see someone setting off to Varley's in a huge bunch, and turning around 100m up Sth Karori Rd on account of the size of the group, and going up Koru instead...

odd, i'd have thought that was the point of starting with the road section to varley's - anyway you go is going to be crowded at first but at least the road leaves plenty of time to space out a bit as you climb up makara hill rd so that by the time you hit varleys everyone should be more or less in order of climbing speed.

never go back - that's admitting you've made a mistake!

I reckon vertigo is the best trail in the park. Some awesome steep corners, the loopy bridge - great riding. There isn't anything so committing you can't get off and walk a section or two. You should defo take a look. Now is a good time whilst its dry. Plenty of room for sketching into the bush when wet.

The only bit on Trickle that is harder if I recall correctly, is the waterfall rocky drop. I've not done that yet. But i've only been up there on a saddle up hardtail. I can prob have a go on the fsr with the saddle down a bit, steamer style.
