Hey ho to the Hawkes Bay locals.
I'm working in Napier at the moment, and it's looking likely that I'll have a spare Sunday next weekend (17th Aug) and I figure a maiden voyage to Eskdale may be in order. Any info on what the current conditions are like out there.
Also been letting my fingers do the walking and looking like Pedal Power is the place to grab a rental bike (less hassle than boxing mine up for the plane ride). Anywhere else I should be looking for rentals?
If there's anyone around who'd be keen for a trail ride of couple of hours who'd be willing to show me around that would be swell too. But if there's a decent map I'm more than happy to find my own way around.

Conditions at Eskdale are surprisingly dry at the moment, just a couple puddles & a few soft spots & with everything covered in a layer of pine tree pollen.
When you purchase your "3 Week Temp Permit" for $5, you'll also get a trail map - which was printed 2 years ago. You can also download the latest trail map from the MAPS page of the website.
Next Sunday, you are welcome to join the weekly social ride, which takes off from the Waipunga Rd carpark at 9am.
(NB: There won't be an official social ride this Sunday 10 August, due to most of the regular riders going up to Taupo for the Teams Relay Race).
Pedal Power is the only outlet that hire off-road MTB in Hawkes Bay.

Can anyone tell me if Eskdale is easy to navigate? Also perhaps a loop that would take say 90 mins? Looking for Billy t, split enz type stuff, not into hard out DH or anything
Also is carparking there safe? gonna try and fit this in on a business trip

Depends if you can read a simple map & have a sense of direction, will depend on if you can navigate your way around Eskdale (a few people can't do this & get lost so easily).
Every track is signposted at both ends (most tracks are 2-way)
We currently have 69km of marked trails (65 named tracks), with more being constructed all the time, spread over 880 acres.
You have 2 car parks to choose - Waipunga Rd or Tait Rd.
Non-members are to purchase a "3 week temp permit" for $5 each, which includes a trail map (printed about Sept 2007) - you can download an up-to-date map off the club website. Permits available from all local cycle shops, Info Centre & the Bayview 4 Square, also from 4 outlets in Waipukurau.
The permit / club membership allows you access into 3 venues (Eskdale, Aropaoanui & Pukeora)
At Eskdale you could cover about 15-20km in a 90 minute ride (depends if you stay down on the flat, or head up into the hills).
Possibly park at Tait Rd & head in from there starting with an easy climb up Zip then take your pick on which track to go down, or continue climbing up around the ridge (Ledge/Fenceline/Ridgeline).
The "DH" tracks are Local DH, DH2, Hi-Roller & Esk DH, the freeride tracks are Pay-Day & freeride and the new Dual Slalom, all others are XC trails of various difficulty.
