I was lucky then, I got in and out for free the other day, they must have felt sorry for me when I said I didn't have $3000 to spend on their cheapest road bike. Big Grin

im now looking for something along the lines of a GT transeo now that ive seen what the shops have to offer

its gonna be a fairly easy winter endurance base training pace and with the gt if i found a race i fancied entering i would be able to make a token entry

im used to touring on SS mtb and the missus uses a flat bared Giant FCR here at home

There is a race calender on this site http://www.mountainbike.orconhosting.net.nz/

3rd item down on the left hand menu.

Cycle trading are also a good bet for a touring type bike.

If you want to try your luck you could see if a suitable bike comes up on www.trademe.co.nz or post a bike wanted ad here on Vorb and see if anyone has a suitable bike sitting around that they would like to sell you.

sorry to bring thread back from the dead , i ended up emailing quite alot of shops in the CHC area and i got 2 replys ...

one trying to sell me bikes in double the price region i suggested and the other from Penny sports (who gave very good advice and were very helpful and understanding in what i required and are holding the bikes for me upon payment of a deposit)

in the end i bought a Kona Jake 08 model for my self and a Kona Dew fs 08 model for my girlfriend. 1700 dollars or there abouts all in.

means no mtb racing for me but probably a good thing , have the uk 24 season starting when i get back.

less than three weeks to go till i take up residence in a tent for 3 and a bit months !

aye ill be off road thats for sure gravy , got a couple of detours off the road anyway , the mt nicolas path from te anau to queenstown amongst others ... touring lightish. Weighed my packed kit the other night 15kg , inc panniers , tent , cooking gear , sleeping gear , clothes and basically all needed to be self sufficent

just meant i couldnt race with the CX bike in xc races , although that presumes its uci governed racing and your national body forbodes it ...

is that the case , esp in endurance events , we have 10-12-24 hour races over here and certain races allow cx bikes , most dont . In standard xc races CX bikes are a no go

As there is not a big Cyclocross scene here I dont think that many of the races will have rules excluding them from races.

I dont even know if the National series bans them?? Someone on here should know tho...

option 2 is to keep an eye on the events thread, then if you see a race you'd like to do and will be there about then see if someone could lend you a bike for the race. just start a thread or mention it in the event one. We're all a pretty social lot and chances are someone racing will have a spare. Smile
