Mountainbike park plan put out
Nelson | Wednesday, 29 October 2008

A design for tracks in the planned Kaiteriteri mountainbike park has been released, with those behind the park saying it has the potential to be "exceptional".

Department of Conservation Motueka area office manager Martin Rodd said mountainbike promoter Jonathan Kennett and mountainbike enthusiast Guy Trainor had finished their assessment of the park. Mr Rodd said the plan needed to get approval from the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board and DOC before work on the 181ha park could start. He hoped work could begin in December.

Mr Rodd said Mr Kennett had been excited by what he saw in the park.

Three of the tracks had been designed around the natural features of the land, with one track at beginner-intermediate level using a natural half-pipe formation.

Mr Rodd said Mr Kennett had recommended that the park include a "pump" track, a skills area and a range of mountainbiking tracks.

He said pump tracks were suitable for riders of all abilities.

"A carefully designed pump track enables the rider to bike the track continuously with momentum. No pedalling is required. The bermed corners, humps and bumps provide a smooth, flowing experience for the rider."

A skills area would allow bikers to develop their skills, which could then be taken to the tracks.

Mr Rodd said that if the park was built using labour from those on community work projects and volunteers, it could take three years to build the estimated 10km of single track. However, this could be done considerably faster if more financial or in-kind support could be found. "There is still some way to go but it is all sounding very positive."
The Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board is due to discuss the park proposal at its November meeting.

Anyone interested in becoming involved or contributing to the park is asked to contact Mr Trainor on morristrainor[at]slingshot.co.nz or 021 030 4519, or to add their name to a list at Coppins Outdoors in Motueka.

Mr Rodd said working bees would commence in mid-November. Details of these would be posted on www.nelsonmountainbikeclub.org.nz
