I disagree with you. I live on a decent hill (Maungaraki) and hated it on the Mountainbike. Changed to a road bike and found it heaps easier.....oh and faster too!!! We are talking a 10% improvement in a week, from being on the mounty to the roadie. This was not a fitness thing, purely bike.

The strange thing is on the mounty I was striving to set my best time. I slaughtered that time on my first attempt on the roadie, and all I was interested in was getting to the top, not racing myself.

I find it is all about getting into the right gear, setting the cadence and working to keep the cadence the same, and controlling the climb through using the gears. I do agree that the key to good climbing is loving the hills, and good solid cardio work.

So how can you love hills? Personally I love the view from the top. I set that in my mind and go for it. The same thing works for business. What the human mind can see and believe it can achieve. It is all in the mind!

I heard ash whitehead say something similar to that -it was interesting hearing that from a strong climber.

I've been doing alot of long climbs at my threshold this year (10-20mins and accumulating an hours climbing). I found it really tough at first but once I learned to tolerate the pain it seemed to get easierish

I reckon even flat riding in Wellington helps, the damn wind can be like a hill of sorts at times...

Saw a quote the other day: all roads are flat, hills are flat roads that point up, head winds are hills you cannot see, so all roads are flat roads.

It's a paraphrase of Greg Lemond's, "It never gets easier, you just go faster..."

I'll go climbing with you Scotty - it'll be great for your morale! Big Grin

{Posted via mobile.vorb.org.nz} hey Scotty, any time you want to go up past the gardens home and feel like a training buddy, give me a text Smile

I also find Aro Valley a good climb home, nice and steady.

The Dixon/terrace/varsity route is just short steep hill sprints, better than repeats, but not hill training.

either that, or we could start doing Salvation - fenceline - scouthall as the commute into work each morning Eh?

I love that .... I am always climbing those damn invisible hills on my way home .... Satan I must say though since modifying my commute to take in some hills most nights I am enjoying them better ... and the really ones are better than the invisble ones .... Big Grin

In Christchurch you can ride the Summit Road in a sub 2 hour ride and get some of the best views anywhere. Very inspiring.

views! if you're out for a hammer-fest on the summit rd and have time to enjoy the views you're definitely not pushing hard enough!!

my hot tip - find someone to train with - a bit of healthy competition makes you push harder and stops you from focussing on the pain
