Im looking at doing the Packhorse Hut track this friday (10/10/2008) but heard it is closed during lambing season. Does anyone know if the track and hut are open at the moment?
Thanks

Hi Tim - welcome to Vorb. I'm guessing you mean this Packhorse Hut in the Canterbury Region: http://www.doc.govt.nz/templates/page.aspx?id=34199 ?

I'll move your post to the Canterbury Forum and hopefully someone will be able to help Smile

If you mean this one, then "Closed for lambing 1 August - 17 October 2008".

note that that's the track from kaituna valley they're talking about (which as far as I kno is no mtbs) - the track from gebbies pass (which is the one people ride) isn't mentioned (could be shut, could be closed)

Ive only ever done it as an epic car shuttle from Kaituna side. Ive never thought to do it as an out and back from Gebbies.

Hmmmmmmm.

ridge track from gebbies is MUCCCH more fun (and not just cos it's got lots less climbing - it's also nearly all nice singletrack and interesting)

Tis a good fun track, but the farmer who owns the farm land that you have to cross to get there from Gebbies Pass (even although you are on a paper road) gets pretty grumpy at the best of times. If there are sheep lambing around there at the moment I would stay well clear.

It is pretty likely that there are sheep lambing there at the moment. Sad

Definitely a fun track. Some photos here http://www.vorb.org.nz/ftopict-64806.html

Watch out for a couple of spots of onga onga on the track, most is small but the native stinging nettle will grow quickly.

One is a large bush with a branch tantalising closer to your elbows as your careen down a narrow section.

If I can be phaffed (ie if it gets me) I will take some loppers up and deal to it, but for now watch out

Double Thumbs Up

It'll just grow back if you cut it off. Using full finger gloves, carefully push the branches aside to get to the base of it, grab the trunk and yank it out roots and all. At LS we have been able to pull out some pretty big plants this way.

Then you could take it home and plant it at Haven - it's a native after all Tongue it
