I was heading up to Teddington to go up Gebbies and then Coopers Knob today when a Subaru Legacy GT Wagon overtook a campervan that in turn was overtaking a cyclist heading for Governor's Bay. The rice rocket pilot swung wider and kept coming at me forcing me into the ditch! I hate that! Scared the living tihs out of me

Yek, thats underwear changing stuff - if we wore any
See the Saturday Herald front page - in some ways we're safer as we can get off the road whereas if the oncoming driver hasn't seen a car coming there is more chance of a crash
I had a similar thing last week - car coming towards me was overtaken by a Harley with a car following it.
I gave the two fingered salute to the woman driver who waved at me.
Thankfully I got her number to send her a Police letter

I had a few near death experiences in wanganui in the weekend.
I never saw anyone at all indicate and was nearly taken out several times by muppets driving through the cycle lanes (dont use the cycle lanes, they are full of glass and parc driving!) Basicaly do not attempt to ride through wanganui on your $9k race bike because you will just end up dieing in a expensive way.

I should have added in the first post that this was a super high speed near miss - the rice rocket was travelling at some serious speed hence the major evasive action into the ditch

Yes It really leaves you a little shakey when you see some crazy fool driving at >100km/h on the wrong side of the road towards you!
I think somebody should build a force field so that we can ride without having to worry about who is bearing down on you in their box of Jap parc.

I had a few too close for comfort encounters riding around Coromandel this weekend too. So many impatient drivers tailgating 'perceived' slower drivers on the hills and then passing irrationally and speeding off..
Luckily I finished intact, unlike the 2 cyclists I passed coming up Pumpkin Hill near Tairua.. after I'd finished my ride at Tairua I drove straight back up in the direction of Cook's Beach, only to pass 2 ambulances and at least one of the same riders bike mangled to pieces on the other side of the hill

Should have taken his wing mirror off
Last time I had a car overtake someone coming towards me like that i swung my fist out and removed the jokers wing mirror off... using an open palm probably more sensible though... taught the guy a lesson though

I'd be scared of breaking my arm off whacking something going 100km/h!

Yeah good response - problem was this was way in excess of 100kph - more like 130 and I really had to dive off the road or I would have been smeared across bonnet and windscreen!
This is a timely reminder of what can happen

Note the point about crossing into the opposite lane

This happened to me the other day. There was a cop parked up on traffic duty directly across the road who saw the whole thing. I got back on the road, looked over at him and raised my hand in a 'WTF?' gesture. He shrugged. Awesome.

I was taught a while back that several motorbikes have a few hidie holes for a good handfull of stones that can be tactfully thrown, just upwards.....very very effective. I will say no more, other than he didn't seem to follow so close afterwards......
I wonder if there is someway of doing the same on a real bike.
