Nelson to Motueka sucks. The road surface is a coesra as it gets, there is often a headwind as you head round Tasman Bay, and a fair amount of Traffic. Nevertheless, once you leave Mot the road improves and the traffic diminishes. The Takaka Hill is a nice climb with only a liitle pinch at the bottom. it is otherwise pretty steady. The view from the top of the Takaka Valley is primo. Nice, fast, descent with hairpins after that, then rolling into town. If you had some knobbies, you could take the Rameka track down into the valley from the top of the Takaka Hill. It's a great track and nearly all down hill thru the bush.

Its at the end of Canaan Rd which is at the top of the Takaka Hill. Pretty sure that it's signposted as an entrance to Abel Tasman National Park.

Check out this for Rameka info:

On your way from Picton to Nelson you could take the Maungatapu Track from Pelorus to Nelson for another off-road route.

Around 3 hours something like that.
Heres a bit of info they have on the track for the race they have up there:

Bit of history behind this track too.

Picton to Nelson is quite nice, a few rough roads and only one hilly section (right before you enter Nelson... basdrats!)
