 |
|
Excerpts from the brochure:
The government has recently purchased St James Station in Canterbury (78,196 hectares) as public conservation land, funded by the Nature Heritage Fund.
The St James Conservation Area is now open to the public, excluding the Ada homestead and surrounding fenced area. Until the new conservation land can be fully assessed, and the best ways to manage the land properly considered, there will be only low-impact recreational activities. The conservation area is still a farm until June 2010 and will be gradually de-stocked up to this date. Leave all gates as you find them and do not disturb stock. The range of activities available in the future will be decided after wider consultation.
Foot, mountain-biking and horse-riding access
There is unrestricted foot access apart from around the Ada homestead. Mountain bikers and horse riders can use all of the formed tracks in the dry country east of the Waiau River.

Sweet. I had some missions planned in there a while back that were denied access. I will put them back on the plan again!!

I highly recommend BOB if you are overnighting it...
Have a look at this thread for more pictures of other overnighting by bike.

Lake Guyon is supposed to have good fish in it... maybe a bit of a ride, stay in the hut, do a little fishing and ride on out...

That looks like the way to go for sure. I'll look into it.
Cheers.

Looks good Big ups to the govt for jumping on this and buying it, a bargain at $40m I would have said, and for a super quick decision on designating it a conservation area and coming up with access policy.
I'll have to add a weekend mission to Hanmer to the to do list. Now if I could just finish my spare time generator......

That trip into Lake Guyon sounds like a go. Would it be day in, day out? What about doing the loop down the Stanley River/Edwards River and back to the Clarence. Could be a big ask doing it with just one night over. Anyone got any ideas how long that trip would take?

Me again. Got excited so mapped it. Here's the link.

Go to the box on top right of screen and change units to metric and tick "show elevation"
It looks easily doable in a two day loop and fairly gradual. I think I'll start planning now.

Hmm I had looked at going in beside Lake Tennyson, around to Lake Guyon (stay in the hut) and coming out where you went in, or out on the other end of your loop.
Apparently that zig zag on your way in is pretty much unrideable going out. Too steep and loose, which is why I had considered doing the bigger loop (if riding with a BOB trailer then any bit of trail you have to be walking is damn hard work!!).

Looks like an easy 2 days - and also a possible one day ride if you're energetic. Distance and elevations are comparable to doing full crater rim circuit, and most looks like easy grade farm track - including 10km of easy gravel road to finish.

awesome, and all this right in my back yard.i think this will help put hanmer on the map for sure. i will try to find a free weekend and will possibly try to measure the time it takes to do each loop or combination and some descriptions of each to make life a bit easier on those of you planning on riding up here.will know more once i have gone out and done a couple of rides.if anybody else is keen let me know, its always easier to do this with a riding buddy.

I has never played with the mapmyride thingie before, but I likes it.
I have mapped one from Fowlers hut to Lake Guyon and back out via Tennyson, I'd be keen on finishing downhill on tophouse road rather than climbing back to the car. Depending on track conditions, it looks like it would be a do-able one day mission to save on carrying gear.

In either case the climbing doesn't look too bad either. Lots of it is river flat or valley floors with long gradual climb / descents, and even the larger hills only have climbs of around 300m - no worse than Port Hills.
